Woman Escapes Death After Concrete Slab Smashes Car

A woman miraculously escaped death after the car she was driving was hit by a falling slab of concrete. The incident, which could have easily taken a turn for the worse, took place along the MRR2 near Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) at around 4.30 pm today (September 19).

According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Chief Asst Comm Zulkefly Yahya, the one square metre-sized piece of concrete was part of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) that is still in construction.

Looking at the condition of the Proton Saga, the 24-year-old woman was lucky to leave the scene alive with only an injured arm. Reports say that she has been taken to the the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) for treatment.

Meanwhile, the project developer, Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn. Bhd. has released a statement confirming the accident. The company says a stop-work order has been issued immediately and it will give full cooperation to the authorities in their investigation.

This is not the first time a motorist has been involved in an accident in a road construction zone and it won’t be the last either if the issue is not addressed sufficiently and promptly. But apart from taking legal action against the developer, which can be costly and time-consuming, what can be done to ensure that this kind of freak accident never happens again?
