Intel’s Mobileye Division Working With Geely’s Zeekr
Zeekr – Geely’s all-electric premium sub-brand will be working with Intel’s Mobileye division on autonomous vehicles technology.
Geely is a brand with big ambitions, and Intel is a tech company that’s still reeling from losing its biggest industry partner Apple and losing its market dominance to AMD. What do you get when these two companies are in a room together? Well, it looks like you get plans to take on the autonomous driving market. Geely’s all-electric premium car sub-brand, Zeekr, will be partnering up with Intel’s Mobileye division to work on autonomous driving technology.
Now, we’re not talking about L3 self-driving, which is already available on a number of high-tech vehicles and waiting regulation change from the various governments around the world. We’re talking about hitting L4 self-driving capability by 2024, and getting there first, before Tesla or any of the other more established marques can.
Level 4 self-driving would mean a vehicle can drive itself without a human really needing to be present. The legislation will have to catch up, as even Level 3 self-driving is still not accepted in all but limited test cases.
Here’s the press release with more information.
Premium electric brand Zeekr will collaborate with Mobileye to expand their strategic technology partnership with a goal to deliver the world’s first consumer autonomous vehicles with L4 capabilities by 2024.
The Program Explained / The plan.
This partnership reflects on 35 plus years of automotive R&D and manufacturing expertise from Geely, as well as Zeekr’s ambition to provide an industry leading autonomous driving solution for its users. The vehicle will utilize Geely SEA architecture’s true redundant braking, steering and power. Under an Open EyeQ concept, 6xEyeQ5 system-on-chips (SoCs) will power an integration of Zeekr’s proprietary software technologies together with Mobileye True Redundancy™ sensing, Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS)-based driving policy and a new open collaboration model on REM mapping technology.
Zeekr and Mobileye’s new collaboration expands on the companies’ long-term strategic technology partnership, which includes the development of advanced ADAS with enhanced capabilities for a variety of Zeekr models. The joint efforts are supported by open collaboration with technologies including REM, as Zeekr and Mobileye work toward achieving a safer and more sophisticated future on the roads.
