See if the Renault 5 E-Tech is the new vintage looking EV for you
The Renault 5 is back, this time reimagined as the all-electric Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, blending retro charm with modern technology. First launched in 1972, the original sold over 5.5 million units worldwide and even had an early electric variant in 1974. Now, this beloved model returns as a stylish, efficient city EV designed for today’s urban life.

Built on Renault’s new AmpR Small electric platform, the Renault 5 E-Tech combines compact dimensions (3.92 m long) with a spacious interior and advanced EV technology. It features a flat underfloor battery layout, giving it a low center of gravity and class leading 326 liters of boot space. Standard 18-inch wheels, short overhangs and wide tracks give it a confident, agile stance.
Moreover, design cues from the original Renault R5, Supercinq, and R5 Turbo are present throughout. A digital “5” replaces the old bonnet vent grille as a charging indicator, and the LED headlights “wink” as a welcome gesture. Retro-inspired bright colors like Pop Yellow and Pop Green nod to its heritage, while the floating LED headlamp design adds a futuristic edge.

Inside, the R5 E-Tech offers a minimalist dashboard, denim or fabric upholstery made from recycled materials, and dual 10-inch digital displays. Higher trims feature OpenR Link with Google built-in and an optional avatar assistant, Reno. The Iconic Five trim includes unique seat embroidery and upgraded materials.
On top of that, two battery options are offered, namely a 40kWh pack for up to 300km of range and a 52kWh pack delivering up to 400km of WLTP range. DC fast charging peaks at 100 kW, while a bidirectional 11 kW AC charger supports home and vehicle-to-grid use. Two motor options, either a 90 kW or 110 kW pack, provide brisk performance for both options.

Advanced safety features include Level 2 Active Driver Assist, automatic emergency braking in reverse, and safe exit alerts. Premium thermal and acoustic insulation ensures a quiet, comfortable ride. There are, of course, many other safety options on the car as well but there is no telling if Malaysia will get them or if we will even get this car here anytime soon.

Expected in the UK in early 2025, the new Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is a clever fusion of heritage, innovation, and sustainable design, bringing fun, style, and practicality to the modern EV landscape. Is this the new, old design EV for you?
