Will Proton Rebadge The Geely Galaxy M9 And Call It The Proton X11 Here In Malaysia?

All 4 newest Proton models have been Geely rebadges, so why not a fifth one right?

The Geely Galaxy M9, an all-new flagship SUV from Geely’s premium Galaxy brand, could soon be making its way to Malaysia under a new name, the Proton X11. Industry insiders suggest that Proton, Geely’s Malaysian automotive partner, is considering rebadging the M9 as part of its continued strategy to expand and modernize its SUV lineup.

The Galaxy M9 made its global debut on 22 May 2025, at a high-profile launch event in Milan. As a full-size six-seater SUV, the M9 represents the pinnacle of Geely’s design and engineering capabilities. Measuring a commanding 5.2 meters in length, the M9 delivers both road presence and interior spaciousness, targeting families and executives who value luxury and versatility.

Moreover, one of the vehicle’s most striking features is its expansive glasswork. Each side window incorporates 0.7 square meters of glazing, maximizing natural light and offering passengers an unparalleled sense of openness and connection with the outside environment. This design element enhances visibility and contributes to a more premium and airy cabin experience.

At the rear, the Geely Galaxy M9 features a dramatic through-type tail light inspired by the motif of “Starlight Ripple.” Constructed from 380 micro-LEDs and layered with a dual-engraved laser design, the lighting signature adds a high-tech and elegant touch, emphasizing the vehicle’s futuristic aesthetic.

Mr. Chen Zheng, VP of Geely Auto Group and Head of Global Design, also described the M9 as a vehicle that “captures a universal sense of beauty,” noting that its design is “understated yet instantly recognizable.” According to Chen, the M9 redefines what it means to be a bold, benchmark-setting SUV through its balanced proportions, wide stance and innovative detailing.

On top of that, if the M9 is indeed rebadged as the Proton X11, it would likely become Proton’s new flagship SUV, positioned above the Proton X90. It would also mark Proton’s boldest entry yet into the large SUV segment, competing with premium offerings from both Japanese and European manufacturers.

Such a move would reflect Proton’s ongoing efforts to elevate its brand and expand its presence in both domestic and regional markets, particularly as consumer demand continues to shift toward larger, more feature-rich SUVs. Since the 4 newest Proton models have been Geely rebadges, this is certainly very likely.

Further confirmation and details are expected from Proton in the coming months.
