Honda Celebrates The 21st Birthday Of Its Hybrid Powertrain

Did You Know That It Has Been 21 Years Of Honda Hybrid Efficiency

Honda Malaysia organised a e:HEV media drive from Petaling Jaya to Penang via a variety of roads to remind the automotive media that Honda leads in hybrid electrified powertrains.

Yes, Honda’s e:HEV which is found in the City, HR-V, CR-V and also Civic (or better known as e:TECHNOLOGY) is a two-motor hybrid system designed to offer both fuel efficiency and a refined driving experience. Add to this, a drive experience that feels sporty with the right engine note entering the cabin space.

This e:HEV system utilizes a combination of series and parallel hybrid setups, seamlessly switching between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive modes for optimal performance in various driving conditions.

Hybrid

Two-Motor System:

Unlike traditional hybrids where the electric motor primarily assists the engine, e:HEV uses the engine to generate electricity that powers the motor, which drives the wheels.

Hybrid

Seamless Switching: The system intelligently switches between three drive modes:

EV Drive: The car is solely powered by the electric motor, drawing energy from the battery pack.

Hybrid Drive: The petrol engine acts as a power generator, producing electricity to power the motor and charging the battery for emissions free mobility.

Engine Drive: The engine directly connects to the wheels via a clutch for efficient high-speed cruising when drive dynamics is needed.

Advantages of e:HEV:  High Fuel Efficiency:

By optimizing the use of electric and engine power, e:HEV aims for excellent fuel economy. The system provides immediate torque from the electric motor for brisk acceleration and a comfortable, refined driving experience. The efficient use of energy contributes to lower CO2 emissions.

The intelligent control system allows for seamless switching between modes, enhancing the driving experience.

In essence, Honda’s e:HEV aims to provide the best of both worlds – the efficiency of an electric vehicle and the range of a traditional petrol powered car, all while delivering a smooth, responsive, and engaging driving experience.

PRESS RELEASE: Honda has set a target to make battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles represent 100% of its new vehicle sales globally by 2040. Honda has been working to establish a strong EV brand and EV business foundation from a mid- to long-term perspective with an eye toward the period of EV popularization, which is expected to begin in the second half of the 2020s.

In the meantime, demand for hybrid-electric vehicles remains high in the current market, within the EV shift period through the mid-2020s. To accommodate such high demand, Honda will continue making steady progress in the development of new hybrid-electric vehicles.

Honda hybrid-electric vehicles equipped with the e:HEV system realize outstanding fuel economy (environmental performance), achieved by the highly efficient two-motor hybrid system, and high-quality and exhilarating driving experience (driving performance), delivered by the high-powered traction motor.

Hybrid heritage

The original 1999 Honda Insight established Honda as a world leader in hybrid technology. it introduced the brand’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, which relied mainly on the engine and called upon electric motor assistance and brake energy recuperation when required to enhance acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. Honda has continued to develop its hybrid technology, and the advanced two-motor e:HEV system is now used in the City, CR-V, HR-V and Civic.
