Seiko Presage Unveils Limited Edition with Unglazed Arita Porcelain Dial
Seiko continues its tradition of blending fine Japanese artistry with mechanical mastery in the latest release from its Presage Classic Series. This new limited-edition timepiece, launching in July 2025, is the first Presage watch to feature an unglazed Arita porcelain dial—a stunning departure from the typically glossy finishes seen in past models.
Arita porcelain has been revered for over 400 years, but this latest watch introduces a modern interpretation of the craft. The unglazed finish delivers a matte, warm white hue with a soft, tactile texture that highlights the intricate dial work. It not only enhances the depth and clarity of the three-dimensional design but also celebrates the time-honored techniques of Japanese porcelain-making in a fresh, contemporary way.
At the heart of the dial is a finely textured rhombus pattern, a traditional Japanese motif symbolizing prosperity and good health. This auspicious design has been used in Arita porcelain ware for centuries and is now reimagined on the watch face, surrounding gold-tone indexes and hands that offer a striking contrast against the subdued porcelain background.
Each dial undergoes a multi-stage manufacturing process requiring expert molding and high-precision firing to ensure durability. A special formulation of Arita porcelain—over four times harder than conventional porcelain—is used to meet the rigors of watchmaking. These dials are handcrafted under the guidance of master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi and produced by Toshiaki Kawaguchi and his team, who have been perfecting the art since 1830 in the town of Arita, Japan.
Beyond its visual beauty, the watch reflects Seiko’s ongoing commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship while embracing innovation. It also aligns with Goal 9 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, promoting sustainable industry and cultural heritage through horological excellence.
Powering this elegant timepiece is the Caliber 6R51, a mechanical movement from Seiko’s 6R series, featuring a gold-colored oscillating weight visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.
Only 1,200 pieces of this remarkable watch will be made available worldwide through Seiko Boutiques and select retailers starting July 2025, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item for lovers of Japanese tradition and fine watchmaking.
