A Facelifted 3rd Generation Peugeot 308 Has Been Shown

Why Malaysia will miss out on the facelifted 3rd gen Peugeot 308.

The Peugeot 308 has long been a symbol of French flair in the competitive C-segment, with bold design, advanced technology, and powertrain options spanning electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and diesel. In Europe, the facelifted third-generation Peugeot 308 has just been unveiled, boasting a sharper illuminated grille, advanced LED lighting, and a refreshed interior with updated connectivity features. Yet here in Malaysia, Stellantis shows no signs of bringing it in – continuing a gap that began when the third-generation model was skipped entirely.

Instead, Stellantis Malaysia has placed its bets on the Peugeot 408, a sleek fastback crossover launched last year. But early indications suggest that the 408 has not been able to establish the same kind of strong footing as rivals from Japanese and Chinese brands. Sales volumes have been modest, and dealer feedback highlights that inventory is already piling up, thus massive discounts are being offered. For Stellantis, which only marked its first year of direct operations in Malaysia recently, this raises serious questions about its product strategy and commitment to local growth.

The omission of the 308 is particularly glaring because the model is a cornerstone for Peugeot in Europe. The facelift brings striking design cues such as an illuminated lion emblem, a wide aerodynamic grille, and a dynamic stance further sharpened with new alloy wheel options. Inside, the cabin is more refined than ever, featuring the latest i-Cockpit® layout, customisable ambient lighting, upgraded infotainment, and new hybrid and EV options that could have given Malaysian buyers a true European alternative.

Yet Stellantis appears hesitant. With the Malaysian market still leaning heavily towards SUVs and crossovers, the company may feel the risk of introducing a premium hatchback is too high – especially when its larger issue remains building brand trust and ensuring consistent aftersales support.

Still, for Peugeot enthusiasts in Malaysia, the absence of the 308 is a letdown. Stellantis promised bold expansion when it took over operations here, but after a year, the reality is far less ambitious. Without icons like the 308 to draw attention, Peugeot risks fading further into the background, remembered only for what could have been.

For now, Malaysians will have to watch from afar as Europe enjoys the refreshed Peugeot 308 – a reminder of the aggressive product push Stellantis has yet to deliver here.
