BYD to Establish First EV Assembly Plant in Malaysia at Tanjong Malim, Perak

In a major milestone for Perak’s economic transformation, global electric vehicle leader BYD Company Limited (BYD) has announced plans to establish its first automotive assembly plant in Malaysia. The facility will be located within KLK TechPark, Tanjong Malim, reinforcing the state’s ambition of becoming a premier automotive hub.

The investment was secured in record time, just three months, through the Muallim Speed-Lane (M-SL) Fast-Track Construction Project, an initiative launched in 2023 to position the Muallim district on the international automotive map. The project was spearheaded by YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak, together with YB Loh Sze Yee, Perak State Executive Council Member of Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development, who coordinated discussions and streamlined processes to attract BYD’s commitment.

BYD’s presence in Perak is expected to be a game-changer for Malaysia’s EV industry. Beyond creating employment opportunities, the plant will facilitate technology transfer, enhance local expertise in EV manufacturing, and stimulate supporting industries. These spillover effects will allow local businesses to integrate into the global EV supply chain, strengthening Malaysia’s position in the regional automotive sector.

As the anchor tenant of KLK TechPark’s first phase, BYD will occupy 150 acres of the 1,500-acre integrated industrial hub developed by KLK LAND. Future phases of the project are designed to attract vendors, suppliers, and complementary businesses, fostering a complete automotive ecosystem. KLK TechPark is envisioned as a hub for advanced manufacturing and green technology, providing the infrastructure and ecosystem necessary to accelerate industrial growth.

The investment also aligns with Perak’s long-term development strategies under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan and the Perak Structural Plan 2040, which prioritize industrial and manufacturing growth as key drivers of socio-economic progress. With BYD taking the lead, Tanjong Malim is set to become a magnet for high-value investments and a catalyst for Malaysia’s EV transformation.

This landmark project not only strengthens Perak’s role in the nation’s automotive future but also highlights Malaysia’s readiness to embrace sustainable mobility and position itself as a competitive player in the global EV industry.
