Can The GR Bodykit Push Toyota Fortuner Sales Up

With its dated facelift can the Fortuner compete with new rivals from China

The current Toyota Fortuner started selling in Malaysia in February 2021, introducing new variants, an updated design, a more powerful 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine for the 2.8 VRZ, and enhanced safety features like the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). This facelift is the model currently sold in Malaysia and there was NO official launch.

UMW Toyota Motor introduced an optional GR bodykit for the 2021 Toyota Fortuner to boost sales, adding a sportier aesthetic to the SUV.

Priced at RM3,990, the accessory is available for the 2.4-liter and 2.7-liter variants, but not for the top-spec 2.8 VRZ, which has a different factory body style.

Available for the 2.7 SRZ and 2.4 models, this accessory includes a front bumper skirt, fog lamp garnish, and other aerodynamic parts to give the Fortuner a more sporty and aggressive appearance, enhancing its attractiveness to consumers.

The GR bodykit was released in August 2024 as part of an enhancement package for the Fortuner includes the following:

Front bumper skirt: An ornate front spoiler with integrated LED daytime running lights.

Front fog lamp garnish: Chrome trim around the fog lamps.

Rear bumper skirt: A redesigned rear skirt featuring a black diffuser insert

The GR Bodykit is offered by UMW Toyota Motor, the official distributor in Malaysia, for the enhanced 2024 Fortuner models. You can inquire at Toyota dealerships or visit their official website to learn more about ordering the accessory.

Remote Engine Start is now available on the Fortuner 2.8 VRZ and Fortuner 2.7 SRZ models. The starting price for the new Toyota Fortuner is RM195,880 without insurance and three engine options are available.

Meanwhile, we have some readers asking us if the Toyota Fortuner is a rival to the Omoda C9?

Well, the Fortuner does not compete directly with the Omoda C9 because they serve different purposes: the Fortuner is a rugged, capable off-road SUV, while the Omoda C9 is a luxury-focused, on-road oriented premium SUV with advanced technology and performance. The Fortuner prioritizes off-road ability and durability with its diesel engine and robust build, whereas the Omoda C9 offers a powerful petrol engine, a sophisticated interior, and cutting-edge tech features for a comfortable, premium driving experience.

Key Differences

Engine: The Fortuner uses a diesel engine, while the Omoda C9 uses a petrol engine.

Purpose: The Fortuner is a tough off-roader, while the Omoda C9 is a sophisticated luxury vehicle for the road.

Technology: The Omoda C9 is significantly more advanced technologically, with features like large screens and modern ADAS.

Design: The Fortuner has a utilitarian, rugged exterior, while the Omoda C9 has a more modern, stylish, and luxurious design.

Ultimately, the “competition” depends on the driver’s needs. A buyer looking for ruggedness and off-road capability would choose the Fortuner, while someone prioritising on-road luxury, style, and advanced technology would prefer the Omoda C9.

Interestingly, where is the all new Fortuner for 2026?
