First Drive Impression: Is the Proton e.MAS 5 the Game Changer Malaysia’s EV Market Needs?

We drove the Proton e.MAS 5 last week. Here’s what we learnt.

The introduction of the Proton e.MAS 5 has generated considerable buzz, not just as the national carmaker’s most affordable electric vehicle (EV), but as a compact hatchback promising genuine driving excitement at an accessible price point. With a starting price of RM59,800 for the Prime and RM72,800 for the Premium variant (RM3,000 off this year for both variants), it directly targets the heart of the Malaysian commuter segment. Our recent media drive, which included challenging high-altitude runs up Genting Highlands, provided an opportunity to assess whether this newcomer truly delivers on its dynamic promises.

Driving Dynamics

The most compelling aspect of the e.MAS 5 Premium variant, which boasts a 40.16 kWh CATL LFP Battery and a WLTP-rated range of 325 km, lies in its surprising handling prowess. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup of the e.MAS 5 stands out due to its motor positioned at the rear axle, placing significant weight over the driven wheels and thereby enhancing traction during acceleration.

This configuration contributes to an exhilarating driving experience, characterised by immediate low-end torque delivery that makes the car feel exceptionally quick off the mark. This is evident in the Premium variant’s impressive official 0–50 km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds.

While its 0–100 km/h time may not be as striking, the car’s sheer responsiveness in city driving conditions is commendable, perfectly suited for daily commuting. Driving through the winding inclines and descents of Genting Highlands further reveals the car’s unexpected planted feel, with the chassis maintaining composure and allowing drivers to confidently increase speed through corners.

This agility highlights the advantages of the EV architecture and meticulous suspension tuning. Adding to its dynamic capabilities, the e.MAS 5 is equipped with a Multi-Link Rear Suspension, a feature typically reserved for more premium segments. This advanced suspension system significantly enhances the car’s stability and cornering grip, contributing to its overall driving performance.

Ride Comfort and Practicality

Beyond the spirited driving, the e.MAS 5 manages to deliver on comfort and practicality—essentials for its target market. The e.MAS 5 offers a comfortable ride, thanks in large part to its multi-link rear suspension which significantly enhances passenger comfort.

This advanced suspension system ensures ride stability and compliance, even when the vehicle is fully loaded, effectively absorbing road imperfections for a smoother experience. Despite its compact hatchback appearance, the e.MAS 5 is physically larger than a Perodua Myvi, with dimensions measuring 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,580 mm in height, complemented by a 2,650 mm wheelbase.

These generous proportions translate into ample passenger space, providing considerable legroom and headroom, especially in the rear seats. Additionally, Proton has emphasised the car’s practicality with an exceptional storage capacity, boasting a best-in-class 32 storage compartments. This includes a sizeable 70-litre front trunk (frunk) equipped with pneumatic rods and a 375-litre boot space, catering to a variety of storage needs.

Interior and Technology

The cabin is dominated by a large 14.6-inch FHD display head unit, powered by an Automotive Grade Chip and running Proton’s ATLAS Auto Operating System.

This infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ and features an Integrated Live Charging Map, a highly useful function for new EV owners.

The use of an Automotive Grade Chip is said to improve its responsiveness under high heat situations, which we did not get to test on Genting Highlands. While it’s all quite premium for such an inexpensive vehicle, certain design choices raised pragmatic concerns.

The optional Alabaster White interior, available with Marble Cream and Quartz Rose exterior colours, appears particularly susceptible to dirt, especially in high-touch areas such as the centre console, cupholders, and trays. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that these areas feature removable rubber mats in the same white colour, making stains and grime more noticeable.

Additionally, the integration of all air conditioning controls into the software interface, without any physical switches and relying solely on a simplified temperature slider, proves to be inconvenient. This design choice becomes even more frustrating when considering that the e.MAS 7 already offers a practical physical workaround.

Furthermore, the car’s strong visual resemblance to its Geely-based sibling, the Geely Xingyuan, is evident. Despite its modern and friendly aesthetic, the prominent “star” motif on the C-pillar and dashboard decorative insert directly reflects the Geely model’s name, “Star Wish.” This suggests a lack of effort on Proton’s part to establish a unique local design identity, which should be a fundamental aspect of their design strategy.

Finally, the lack of a rear wiper seems like a pretty massive oversight on a hatchback such as this. We were prepared to see if Geely had designed a workaround, but no, the e.MAS 5’s rear glass looks like this in heavy rain:

Range and Affordability: A New Benchmark

With the Premium variant’s 325 km WLTP range, the e.MAS 5 is clearly positioned as an urban and regional commuter, rather than an ideal interstate traveller. DC fast charging capability allows a charge from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

Ultimately, the e.MAS 5’s strength lies in its value proposition. At its introductory price, it is one of Malaysia’s most affordable EVs. When adjusting for inflation, the price of the fully-specced e.MAS 5 is comparable to the Perodua Myvi when it debuted 20 years ago for RM50,000 for the 1.3L model. Considering the modern platform, technology, and superior running costs, the e.MAS 5 offers a highly compelling entry point into electric vehicle ownership for many M40 and T20 families looking for a secondary vehicle or for first-time university-bound drivers.
