MG Motor Malaysia might bring in the MG U9 pick-up truck soon.
The highly anticipated MG U9 pick-up truck, MG’s first foray into the segment, is poised for a significant arrival in the Malaysian market, having recently been launched in Australia with a starting price of AUD$52,990 drive-away. The new ute arrives with strong credentials, including a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating, and is designed to appeal to the modern “urban” buyer who seeks a blend of rugged capability and premium sophistication in the dual-cab segment.
The U9 is powered by a robust 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces a competitive 217PS of power and 520 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a responsive ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and an advanced BorgWarner 4×4 system, which, on the range-topping Explore Pro model, includes electronically-controlled locking differentials on both the front and rear axles for enhanced off-road prowess. The entire U9 range boasts a maximum 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, aligning it with class leaders. Payload capacity ranges from 870 kg for the Explore variant down to 770 kg for the Explore Pro, influenced by its unique suspension setup.
A key differentiating feature of the MG U9 is its independent multi-link rear suspension system, which replaces the traditional leaf springs found on many rivals. This choice prioritizes SUV-like ride comfort and stability, positioning the U9 as a versatile vehicle suitable for both highway cruising and off-road adventures. However, this configuration does result in slightly lower ground clearance compared to some competitors, sitting at 220 mm unladen. The U9 also features a wading depth of 550 mm.
Inside, the U9 takes a bold, premium approach, moving away from a traditional workhorse aesthetic. The cabin is dominated by a sophisticated setup featuring a dual 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and central infotainment screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features across all variants. The top-spec Explore Pro variant further elevates the experience with luxurious features such as real leather upholstery, a suede headliner, a panoramic sunroof, and a driver’s seat that includes both ventilation and massage functions. For enhanced utility, the rear seating features a MultiFold function that allows the seats to fold completely flat, creating a continuous load space. The Explore Pro variant also offers the optional “Smart Hatch,” an electronically retractable rear window that creates a pass-through from the cabin to the tub, allowing for cargo up to 2.4m long.
The U9’s dimensions are sizable, measuring 5,500 mm in length and 1,997 mm in width, riding on a 3,300 mm wheelbase. Safety is reinforced across the range with seven airbags, a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and a 360-degree high-definition camera system. With its blend of advanced technology, premium comfort features, and robust mechanicals, the MG U9 is well-equipped to challenge established models when it officially arrives in the Malaysian market.
