2nd Gen Mercedes-Benz GLB Confirmed, Available As EV With 631 km Range

The Mercedes-Benz GLB gets a 2nd generation with the option of an EV powertrain.

Mercedes-Benz has restructured their compact car model line-up, spearheading a new generation with the new CLA while discontinuing the A-Class but maintaining the GLB – a rather unique compact SUV. This is because it’s the only compact SUV with a 7-seater configuration. The new model is available as an EV with an 800 volt electric architecture and this time they’re not selling it as the EQB but just the GLB 300 4MATIC.

Electric Drivetrain and Charging

Set to debut in spring 2026, the initial market launch introduces two models: the GLB 250+ and the GLB 350 4MATIC, both equipped with advanced EQ Technology. The GLB 250+ starts at a list price of €59,048 in Germany, delivering an impressive output of 200 kW and offering a remarkable range of up to 631 kilometres based on WLTP standards. This model is designed for efficiency and long-distance driving. On the other hand, the GLB 350 4MATIC, positioned as the sporty top-of-the-line variant, is priced from €62,178.

It boasts a robust output of 260 kW and features the sophisticated 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. This includes an 80 kW drive unit on the front axle, which engages via a Disconnect Unit (DCU) only when necessary, enhancing performance without compromising efficiency. Together, these models showcase cutting-edge technology, catering to diverse driving preferences and needs.

The GLB features a robust lithium-ion battery with an impressive usable energy capacity of 85kWh, ensuring excellent performance. It incorporates a state-of-the-art 800-volt electric architecture, optimising efficiency. Fast charging capabilities allow up to 260 kilometres of range (WLTP) to be added in just 10 minutes, with DC charging supporting up to 320 kW and AC charging up to 22 kW. The standard adaptive damping system, paired with 20-inch wheels, enhances ride comfort. Additionally, it offers an outstanding towing capacity of up to 2 tonnes, setting a top value benchmark for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in its class.

Dimensions and Versatility

The new Mercedes-Benz electric GLB is designed for maximum utility, offering both five-seater and seven-seater configurations to cater to diverse needs. Its wheelbase has been extended by 60 millimetres compared to its predecessor, now measuring 2,889 millimetres, enhancing interior space. Drivers and front passengers will appreciate the increased headroom, up by 35 mm compared to the EQB, ensuring added comfort.

Remarkably, the GLB can securely accommodate up to four child seats across the second and third rows, with an additional seat in the front passenger area, making it ideal for families. The optional third row comfortably seats individuals up to 1.71 metres tall. Cargo capacity is generous, with the rear boot offering up to 540 litres in the five-seater model and 480 litres in the seven-seater. When the rear seats are folded, this expands to 1,715 and 1,605 litres, respectively. Additionally, the front boot, or “frunk,” is the largest in the new model family, offering 127 litres.

Technology and Safety Systems

The interior features a high-tech, radically redesigned aesthetic. The optional MBUX Superscreen includes a 26 cm (10.25 inch) driver display, a 35.6 cm (14 inch) central display, and an optional 35.6 cm (14 inch) front passenger display. This system operates on the proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). Driver assistance features, standard in Europe, include the MB.DRIVE system with DISTRONIC distance control, utilising eight cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors for enhanced safety. Passive safety is bolstered by a new centre airbag, standard and deployed between the driver and front passenger during severe side impacts, alongside an improved body shell for added side impact protection.
