Did you know that one person dies in a Malaysian road accident approximately every two hours. Motorcyclists account for a significant majority of these deaths, with an average of 12 fatalities daily.

Meanwhile, more than 80% of accidents are attributed to driver behavior, such as poor driving habits, speeding, and negligent driving, rather than road conditions.

In November 2025, three people died in a collision involving two lorries and a car in Kulai, Johor. In September 2025 an incident in Selangor involved a 12-month-old baby who died after being trapped under a car. Then there was a married couple who died in a Ford Mustang crash in Segamat in August 2025, after the vehicle lost control and hit two electricity poles.

Authorities like the Ministry of Transport have implemented measures, such as banning goods vehicles during festive periods, to reduce risk. Road safety campaigns consistently urge drivers to be vigilant, wear seatbelts (which are mandatory for all occupants), and adhere to traffic regulations

Three students were killed in an accident on the PLUS highway in June 2025 while riding two motorcycles back to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidiladha. While total accident numbers increased, particularly around festive seasons, there has been a general downward trend in fatalities from 2012 to 2022, excluding the pandemic years.

Malaysia faces significant road safety challenges, with around 600,000 accidents and over 6,000 deadly fatalities annually, averaging 18 deaths daily, heavily impacting motorcyclists (65% of deaths), especially young adults (16-35). While the fatality rate has fallen from decades past, Malaysia remains high in ASEAN, with major issues linked to driver behavior, traffic volume, enforcement, and infrastructure, costing the economy millions per life lost.
