The upcoming Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV has been previewed at the Proton Tech Showcase event in Shah Alam.
Proton is currently hosting their Technology Showcase event, which will be open to the public for the next 3 days. Today’s opening day is reserved for guests, the media and partners. One of the key highlights was the e.MAS 7 plug-in hybrid variant, which was displayed with its doors locked, windows heavily tinted and exterior wrapped. It should also be noted that the naming has not been officially confirmed, so we’ll be referring to it as the ‘e.MAS 7 PHEV’, but it may well be called something else by the time it’s launched.

Another mystery at the time of publishing is whether this car will be marketed under Proton or PRO-NET and whether that means its sale will be restricted to e.MAS dealerships. We’re betting it’ll be an e.MAS product rather than a Proton vehicle as this is technically a new energy vehicle, which falls under PRO-NET’s purview. Still, the gap between plug-in hybrid and hybrid is pretty close and this would be a significant shift for PRO-NET, as they have only dealt with pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) so far.

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV will likely feature a low-powered 1.5L four cylinder petrol engine paired to a high-powered single electric motor for combined driving range of 943km, including 84km of pure electric driving.

It should feature a relatively large 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with charging capabilities of 7kW over AC and 30kW over DC, plus vehicle-to-load capabilities up to 6kW. These are specifications tied to the Geely-derived model sold in Australia, the EX-5 em-i.

Visually, there are a number of details that distinguish the BEV from the PHEV. The bumpers, headlights, taillights, door handles and rims are all unique to the PHEV model.

At the front the lights are a single unified strip to match the taillights, which are now tinted.

The door handles are no longer flush against the body but are of the traditional design on the PHEV. The rims are 19″ across with black Proton centre caps and matched lug caps too. They are wrapped in Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance SUV tyres.

Will the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV launch this year? It’s unlikely, but you can expect an early 2026 launch. The car looks as close to ready as can be.
