BMW Group Malaysia debuts Asia-Pacific’s First All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro
BMW Group Malaysia unveils two new fully electric models, including its first locally assembled BMW EV – a historic first for Asia-Pacific.
BMW Group Malaysia today announced the arrival of the All-New BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro – the first-ever fully electric BMW model to be locally assembled
This is an executive sedan that is suited just as much to business trips as to private journeys, the all-new model introduces the extensively enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, offering up to 627 km of electric range (WLTP), alongside a comprehensive suite of intelligent driving assistance systems.

The All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro features a reinterpreted exterior that blends elegant, flowing lines with distinctive, sportier details. The illuminated BMW Shadowline Iconic Glow grille serves as the focal point of the front end, paired with modern Adaptive LED headlights featuring vertical daytime running light elements.
The elongated silhouette flows into a sculpted rear section, highlighted by slender LED taillights finished in Shadowline treatment for added visual impact. The M Sport Pro package includes 20-inch M Aerodynamic Wheels 939M Bicolour Black Grey, M rear spoiler in gloss black, M high-gloss shadowline and M Sport brakes in dark blue metallic for a distinctly sporting presence. Luggage capacity is measured at 490 litres, expandable with a 40/20/40 split and accessible via automatic operation of tailgate.
Inside, the driver-oriented BMW Curved Display — comprised of a 12.3-inch instrument display and 14.9-inch touchscreen — forms the centrepiece of the cockpit, combining natural language and touch commands.
Smooth adjustments to lighting conditions ensure that drivers have everything in view. Meanwhile, the innovative BMW Interaction Bar, extending across the dashboard and into the doors, integrates touch-sensitive controls and dynamic ambient lighting, while elegantly concealing the air vents.
Underlining the sporty character of the sedan, the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro features M Leather steering wheel, M seat belts and M headliner anthracite.
Within the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro, Dark Silver M accent combined with Carbon Fibre and high-gloss silver threads, BMW individual Merino genuine leather upholstery reinforces the vehicle’s premium character. Additionally, the panorama glass roof enhances the sense of openness in the cabin and is complemented by a retractable shade for added flexibility.
Meanwhile, comfort and convenience are elevated with fully electric sport seats with memory function and lumbar support, comfort access system, travel & comfort system, roller sunblinds, four-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging tray, and the interior camera with still-image and video capture capabilities.
Space in the rear section is as generous as the front section, giving passengers more freedom of movement, both in the footwell and in terms of headroom. Meanwhile, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with 18 speakers and 655-watt amplifier, in combination with the BMW IconicSounds Electric, delivers a class-leading acoustic experience for both driver and passengers.
Under the hood, the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro delivers electrifying performance with maximum range, courtesy of an updated fifth-generation BMW eDrive system.
The rear-mounted electric motor produces up to 340 hp and 430 Nm of torque, achieving 0–100 km/h in just 6 seconds, with a top speed of 193 km/h.
A major enhancement for the model is silicon carbide (SiC) converter upgrades, alongside new battery and thermal management technologies – including adaptive recuperation and an intelligent heat pump system that efficiently manages cabin, drive, and high-voltage battery temperatures.
This contributes to its extended range, enabling the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 to achieve up to 513–627 km (WLTP) on a full charge. Did you know that the previous i5 had a possible 582 kilometers of maximum driving range.
Charging capabilities include up to 22 kW of AC charging, allowing for 0-100% charge in 4 hours 15 minutes and up to 205 kW DC fast charging, allowing for 10–80% in just 34 minutes. Adaptive Suspension Professional with Integral Active Steering comes standard, enhancing agility, stability, and manoeuvrability by enabling the rear wheels to steer up to 2.5°.
Additionally, the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro is equipped with comprehensive Driving Assistance Systems. As standard, the Driving Assistant Professional includes Distance Control with Stop & Go, Steering & Lane Control Assistant, Speed Limit Assist, Side Collision Protection with Active Return, Road Priority Warning and Wrong-way Warning, the front and rear Crossing-traffic Warning with braking function as well as the Emergency Lane Assistant and Emergency Stop Assistant functions.
Meanwhile, the standard Parking Assistant Plus features start monitoring, Reverse Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant, Parking View, Panorama View front, 3D View functions, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and anti-theft recorder.
Powering connectivity within the All-New Locally Assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro, the BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect provides intuitive, smartphone-like interaction, while BMW Maps delivers charge-optimised navigation tailored for the fully electric model. Other key features include BMW Live Cockpit Professional, Teleservices, ConnectedDrive services, Connected Drive Professional, Smartphone Integration, Personal eSIM, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Digital Key Plus with security-optimised Ultra Wideband (UWB), interior camera with remote viewing via My BMW App. Additionally, Proactive Care comes with a comprehensive suite of features to identify service or assistance needs alongside suitable solutions.
Condition-Based Servicing provides updates on the routine service requirements of the vehicle, with additional consideration of the vehicle’s actual condition; Accident Assistant (A-Call) enables contact with BMW Accident Assistance in the case of minor accidents without airbag activation; Live Diagnosis is a process that ensures continuous tracking of error patterns in all relevant systems; while Digital Tyre Diagnosis is an early warning detection to convey information in the vehicle and via the My BMW app about the general condition of the tyres.
Exterior colours include Black Sapphire Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Phytonic Blue Metallic and Oxide Grey Metallic. Meanwhile, interior trim features BMW Individual Leather ‘Merino’ Black/Atlas Grey upholstery.
So, what is the asking price. Well, the previous i5 asking price at launch was RM419,800. Then in March 2024 the i5 got an upgrade and its selling price moved to RM399,800.
