Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has updated the Mk8.5 Golf R-Line.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially strengthened its local hatchback lineup with the launch of the Golf R-Line. This latest iteration, based on the Mk8.5 facelift, complements the performance-focused GTI by offering a lifestyle-oriented alternative that emphasizes efficiency and modern technology. Locally assembled in Pekan, the Golf R-Line is priced at RM185,990, while the first 50 owners can take advantage of an early bird offer at RM179,990.
Efficiency Meets Performance
The headline for this update is the new 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid (mHEV) turbocharged engine. Delivering 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, this powertrain incorporates a 48V belt-starter generator to improve fuel economy and provide a smoother driving experience during coasting and start-stop operations. Paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission, the Golf R-Line achieves a combined fuel consumption of just 5.2L/100km, making it the most efficient variant in the local range.
Sharper Exterior and “Coventry” Wheels
Visually, the Mk8.5 facelift brings modern aerodynamic enhancements and sharper lines. Key exterior highlights include:
- IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix Headlights: Featuring a new high-performance main beam and an illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front bumper.
- 3D LED Taillights: Redesigned clusters with dynamic turn signals and animated rear graphics.
- Exclusive Styling: ‘R-Line’ design front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and the newly introduced 17-inch ‘Coventry’ alloy wheels.
A Driver-Focused Digital Cabin
Inside, the cabin has been completely overhauled with a focus on intuitive control and premium comfort. The center stage is taken by a tablet-style 12.9-inch Media infotainment display running the new MIB4 system, which offers a faster interface and built-in navigation. The driver is also supported by the Digital Cockpit Pro, a 10-inch high-resolution instrument cluster with customizable menus.
To address previous feedback, the leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel now features physical buttons for better tactile feedback. Other comfort features include 3-zone Climatronic air conditioning with an allergen filter and wireless smartphone connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Advanced IQ.DRIVE Safety
Safety remains paramount with the integration of the IQ.DRIVE system, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Standard safety features include Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Travel Assist, and Lane Assist. The vehicle also includes a Driver Attention Detection system to monitor behavior on long journeys.
Both launch prices include the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which provides 5 years of free maintenance, a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years of roadside assistance.
