End of an Era: KOHL Group to Cease AC Schnitzer Tuning Operations by Late 2026

After decades of being a globally recognized synonym for sporty driving, AC Schnitzer will cease its operations as a manufacturer of tuning parts for BMW and MINI.

The KOHL Group’s decision to end AC Schnitzer’s run as a manufacturer is described by Managing Director Rainer Vogel as a “rational decision regarding an emotional brand”. Various economic factors have made the tuning business in Germany increasingly difficult to maintain, including rising development costs and a sluggish approval process for parts that has seen the brand fall behind international competitors.

The Challenges of the Modern Automotive Era

Beyond manufacturing logistics, the industry faces a fundamental shift in consumer behavior and technology. The gradual phase-out of internal combustion engines (ICE) has removed much of the traditional “tinker-friendly” appeal that fueled the tuning industry for decades.

Unlike traditional ICE vehicles, where performance could be extracted through mechanical modifications like exhaust systems or turbo upgrades, modern Electric Vehicles (EVs) are largely locked software environments. The modularity of a gasoline engine is replaced by a high-voltage battery and motor system that offers very little room for mechanical modification without compromising the vehicle’s core operating system.

Furthermore, the increasing complexity of modern ICE vehicles has created significant barriers for enthusiasts. Today’s high-tech engines are governed by intricate sensors and proprietary software; unauthorized modifications often lead to immediate warranty issues, as manufacturers can easily detect changes to the engine’s “brain.” This risk has significantly reduced the desire for younger owners to modify their cars compared to their fathers’ generation. Of course, AC Schnitzer would have ways to circumvent this issue when selling pre-modified vehicles directly to customers. However, as the modding culture around modern BMW vehicles fades away, the aftermarket culture also disappears.

Economic Headwinds and Market Conditions

The KOHL Group noted that deteriorating international market conditions—including volatile exchange rates and rising raw material prices—have left a mark on the balance sheet. Additionally, a general reluctance to spend amid a four-year global economic downturn has caused a collapse in the domestic German market.

“It is certainly also true that we—like other tuning companies—have not succeeded in inspiring young customers to enjoy sporty driving with our brand to the same extent as their fathers’ generation did,” Vogel added.

Looking Ahead: Brand Acquisition and Final Inventory

The KOHL Group is currently in talks with parties interested in acquiring the AC Schnitzer brand. Regardless of those discussions, the brand will begin selling off its existing inventory by the end of this year.

Fans and the international dealer network have one final opportunity to purchase iconic products, including forged wheels, aerodynamic add-ons, and suspension upgrades. The KOHL Group has assured customers that all warranties and after-sales support will be guaranteed beyond the end of 2026.
