Will This BYD Shark Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Come To Malaysia

The 2025 BYD Shark (PHEV) is a high-performance, mid-size plug-in hybrid pickup truck featuring a 1.5L turbo petrol powered engine and dual electric motors producing an impressive 321kW/650Nm. It boasts a possible 100km electric battery powered driving range (NEDC) and an impressive 800km plus total driving range when the fuel tank is full. Plus it has a 2.5 ton braked towing capacity. It is a spacious dual-cab pickup truck, boasting advanced technology and V2L capability.

Designed for off-road performance, this platform uses a longitudinal engine setup combined with electric motors, offering 321kW and 650Nm of torque. It enables a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds.

The interior features a 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 50W wireless charger, and a head-up display (HUD). Meanwhile, a double-wishbone independent suspension is used for both front and rear, aimed at providing better ride comfort compared to traditional leaf-spring pickups. You will also get adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a 360-degree camera system.

Why we are sharing and asking this question? Well, previous rumours in the market said that brand new pickup truck nameplates will not be allowed for sale in Malaysia to keep the current segment from being shrunk. This information has NOW been clarified by MITI in an official document (see below).

The BYD Shark pickup truck was teased to Malaysians in November last year and since then there has been no whisper of its launch.

Plus, with high diesel costs at the pump, many urban cowboys with diesel powered pickup trucks were ready to trade in their trucks for a PHEV or electric vehicle.

Diesel powered pickup truck owners who use their vehicles for plumbling, garden work, building sites, farming and so on were not reacting as quickly and still appreciated the reliability and distance driving possibility with their workhorse diesel pickups.
