Teenager dead, three injured in car crash in Labuan

A male teenager very sadly lost his life while three others were injured after the car they were travelling in crashed at Simpang 20, Kampung Lajau, Labuan early yesterday morning.

The incident happened at 1.42am very early morning and the 16-year-old victim was confirmed dead after getting trapped in the front passenger seat.

Another 13-year-old passenger was thrown out of the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment. (were they using their seat-belts?)

Two more victims aged 19 and 20-year-old were also injured and sent to Labuan Hospital earlier by the public before the fire brigade arrived.

Operations Commander, Senior Fire Officer One of the Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia (JBPM) Labuan, Mohamad Irwan Jaidin said, his party received an emergency call before a group of members were chased to the location.

“The car in question is believed to have lost control before crashing. The trapped victim was removed using special equipment.

“He was confirmed dead by Labuan Hospital medical officers before the body was handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

Drivers and car passengers please take note.

In Malaysia, it is mandatory for all vehicle occupants, including those in the rear seats, to wear seatbelts since 2009. The law requires rear passengers to use seatbelts in vehicles registered after January 1, 1995, with some exceptions for older vehicles and larger passenger/goods vehicles. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to RM2,000 or a jail sentence of up to one year.
