Why Did We Take The Chery Tiggo 9 Premium SUV Off-Road

The Chery Tiggo 9 is equipped with Chery’s Full-Scene Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system paired with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (256PS and 390Nm). The product planners and marketers at Chery wanted us to experience the capability of this premium SUV and to better understand the engineering that has been included to give this family SUV more than just tarmac driving capabilities.

While it is an urban luxury SUV rather than a heavy-duty rock crawler, its intelligent 4×4/AWD system is engineered to handle a wide variety of road surfaces and light off-road conditions.

What the 4×4 ….. AWD System Can Do? Well, There Are 7 Selectable Terrain & Drive Modes

On-Road: Eco, Standard/Normal, and Sport.

Off-Pavement: Sand, Mud, Snow, and Off-Road. These modes automatically adjust throttle sensitivity, transmission shift points, and electronic torque vectoring between the front and rear axles.

Rapid Millisecond Torque Distribution

The electro-hydraulic coupling system can transfer up to 50% of engine torque to the rear wheels in 100 milliseconds when slippage is detected.

On slippery or unpaved inclines, it engages before the front wheels lose full traction, minimizing wheel-spin.

Terrains It Handles Easily

Dirt & Gravel Roads: Ideal for farm trails, campsite access roads, and unpaved country tracks.

Loose Sand & Wet Grass: Traction control prevents the tires from digging down on soft ground or wet lawn pitches.

Muddy Ruts & Rain-Slicked Highways: Keeps the chassis stable in heavy downpours, standing water (hydroplaning resistance), and shallow mud tracks.

Snow & Ice: Smoothly manages reduced adhesion during winter conditions which we in Malaysia do not have but comes with the Tiggo 9 as it is a global product.

Key Operational Capabilities

540° Panoramic Camera with “Transparent Chassis”: Uses cameras to project a view of what is directly under the front axle and wheels, helping you steer around rocks, potholes, and hidden obstacles on rough paths.

Hill Descent & Assist: Electronic braking controls hold or crawl the vehicle smoothly down steep inclines without requiring pedal feathering.

Where It Reaches Its Limit

Deep Rock Crawling: Lacks a mechanical low-range transfer case (4LO) or front/rear physical locking differentials.

Severe Water Fording / Deep Mud: The ground clearance (approx. 180–205 mm) and 20-inch highway-tuned low-profile tires are designed for comfort and pavement grip rather than deep rutting or rocky trails.

This Chery Tiggo 9 was launched In Malaysia priced from RM167K to RM180K.
