Getting the Most from Ford’s 1.0L EcoBoost Engine
Wouldn’t it be nice if a technology gave you more for less? Turned small into big? Ford’s EcoBoost technology is rapidly catching on for its success in providing the much wanted technology to motorists around the world.
For consumers in Malaysia, having a car powered by the world’s most efficient engine technology is no longer far-fetched. And this time, it’s not going to break the bank. Ford recently launched the Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost, which is available in the five-door Sport+ variant. This stylish new Fiesta is the first car from Ford to offer the award-winning 1.0L EcoBoost engine in the country.
Just the size of a piece of A4 paper, the 1.0L EcoBoost engine itself is a mechanical feat as it combines three leading technologies, turbocharging, Ti-VCT and direct fuel injection and fits them into such a compact body that it can even fit into the overhead compartment on a plane. Small as it is, the 1.0L EcoBoost engine generates a surprisingly 125 PS to rival a traditional 1.6L engine while sipping significantly less fuel.
Consumers who have test driven the new Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost at the ‘Fiesta 1.0L Urban Playground’ experiential tours so far have been pleasantly surprised by how powerful and smooth the small three-cylinder EcoBoost actually is.
Lim Fei Hung, a 25-year-old engineer was suitably impressed with how much he could get out of the 1.0L EcoBoost engine. “I can feel the power unleashed from the engine when I accelerate. With this kind of power and such a comfortable interior, the new Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost is certainly a fun and exciting car to drive,” he enthused.
“The drive was smooth, the handling was effortless and the car in general was really easy to manoeuvre. The acceleration from the engine is definitely the best I have driven in the same car segment,” said another test drive participant, 27-year-old medical sales executive, Melissa Sharmini.
But do you, as a consumer, know how to make the best of the EcoBoost technology? Are these sophisticated technologies delivering real benefits to the driver as promised? Stepping into the shoes of the consumer, Ford engineers have introduced a lot of handy features in the new Ford Fiesta that enable the driver to play an active part in going green.
EcoMode – smart gauge leading to eco-driving
EcoMode is an interesting feature to play with on the new Fiesta. Unlike the fuel indicator in the trip computer which only offers instant or average fuel usage data, EcoMode gives the driver a clear indication of their driving behaviour and how it impacts their fuel efficiency. With a fun and easy-to-track scoring system, drivers get a sense of how the way they accelerate, brake, and change gears affects the fuel efficiency of the 1.0L EcoBoost engine.
Tips for better EcoMode scores:
- Gear shifting: use the highest drivable gear appropriate for the road conditions
- Anticipation: adjust vehicle speed and distance to other vehicles without heavy braking or acceleration
- Speed: use a cruising speed on open roads that enables better fuel efficiency
Turning on Cruise Control in good traffic conditions
The most fuel efficient way of driving is to travel at a constant speed. The new Fiesta is now equipped with cruise control, a handy feature to help the driver maintain a constant speed, especially useful when travelling on highways.
Removing unnecessary items
Carrying unnecessary things, especially heavy ones, will add burden to the engine. So do not think of your car as a free warehouse because that will eventually cost you more!
Reduce aerodynamic drag
Another easy way to deliver better fuel efficiency is to reduce aerodynamic drag on the vehicle by closing all the windows when driving at a high speed. This helps increase the aerodynamics of the car and increase fuel efficiency.
