Aston Martin Renames the GT3 the GT12

Following objections from Porsche regarding the use of the ‘GT3’ moniker, Aston Martin has quietly announced the Vantage GT3 special edition will be brought to the market as the “GT12″.

The car was revealed about two months ago, as the Vantage GT3, and it was essentially a stripped-down limited edition with a 6 litre V12 capable churning out of 600 hp and 625 Nm of torque. They’ve managed to shed about 100 kilogrammes off of the V12 Vantage S upon which the car is based so it weighs 1,565 kg.

Porsche, who produce the 911 GT3, contacted Aston Martin, threatening legal action if the British automaker failed to use a different designation for their latest hardcore sports coupe. In response, they backed down and renamed it the “Vantage GT12”, replacing all instances of the use of “GT3” on press releases and promotional material.

Of course, nothing else has changed, with only 100 cars being produced for sale outside of the United States and China before the end of the year. The car still does 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and has a max speed of 297 km/h. No word yet on whether the track-only variant of the GT3 will be renamed the GT12.
