Honda Civic Type R Makes Regional Debut at Gaikindo Auto Show

The Honda Civic Type R, the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the Nurburgring, has made its South East Asian debut. It was launched at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2017 (GIIAS 2017) in Tangerang.

This new Type R features a 2-litre VTEC Turbo engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine generates 310 PS at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 2,500-4,500 rpm. The Type R can be switched between ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘+R’ mode.

The Civic Type R is built exclusively on the 5-door hatchback model. No sedan variant is on offer.

“Type R” has been a legendary name for Honda’s sports models since 1992. For 25 years, Hondas bearing the this designation have been dished out world-class performance by minimising weight, maximising power and giving drivers the extremely satisfying track and road experiences.

The last model to be officially sold in Malaysia was the FD2R. It is very likely that this latest model will make it to our shores before the end of 2017.

In Indonesia at least, the Civic Type R can be had in Rallye Red, Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic, Sonic Gray Pearl, and Championship White. We may see similar colour options, but no official word has been given.

The launch price is IDR995,000,000. Honda Malaysia has been really great with pricing, so a direct currency conversion may not be entirely accurate.

Are you excited for the return of the Civic Type R? Tune after our interview with the Chief Engineer and Assistant Large Project Leader of the Civic Type R, Mr Hideki Kakinuma for more. Visit our facebook page to view a short video of the launch.
