How Efficient Is Your Grip?

This is the question every tire buyer will ask at some point and Goodyear wants to answer this question with a resounding “We have the best Grip for your SUV” and maybe even your MPV.

Now comes the 2nd generation EfficientGrip SUV tyres from Goodyear and we travel to the impressive Chang International Race Circuit in the northern Thailand city of Buriram.

Goodyear has 3 pillars to prove the values of its new EfficientGrip SUV tyres;

  1. EfficientGrip SUV tyres are now quieter from the outside as well from inside the cabin.
  2. EfficientGrip SUV tyres provides better wet weather handling over its immediate competitors. Five tyre competitors in question and they have made sure this new tyre stops in a shorter distance than the competition.
  3. Finally, EfficientGrip SUV tyres provides more comfort on the drive.

Now comes the test.

At stage 1, a Mercedes GLA with competitor tyres was driven along the circuit and its tarmac sound was recorded and saved. Then the same Mercedes GLA had its tyres removed and a new set of EfficientGrip SUV tyres fitted. The same run was done on the tarmac and the sound recorded. The final results were a quieter sound recorded for the EfficientGrip SUV tyres. A quite marginal lower sound at 2.2dB against Continental tyres.

At stage 2, a Mercedes GLA was fitted with competitors tyres and driven on a section of the tarmac that was covered with water. The stopping distance was recorded and then the same Mercedes GLA had its tyres replaced with EfficientGrip SUV tyres and the same run was done and the Mercedes stopped almost 1 meter shorter. This was immediately impressive. In day to day driving this is important as driving in heavy traffic in the rain you need to stop as short as possible to prevent a bumper to bumper crash. This has become very important in ASEAN countries with traffic getting heavier and constant rain.

The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV tyres which we have been informed works just as well with MPV’s will stop shorter in the wet, produce less tyre roar on the road and provides a more comfortable ride. Also, before we forget, this EfficientGrip SUV tyres also has a 3-4% better rolling resistance thus reducing your fuel usage…not much….but still there is a saving.
