Honda Will Shut Down Swindon Plant in 2022

The UK factory where the Honda Civic Type R other more mainstream models are built will be shut down come 2022. Honda themselves haven’t officially confirmed it, but sources including the Member of Parliament for Swindon has backed up the claims.

This won’t have any immediate effect on the availability of the Civic Type R though. The plant will remain open for another 3 years and production on most models will only change or stop come 2021.

Unlike some of the UK’s most recent automotive-related news, this isn’t 100% because of Brexit. A recent trade deal between the EU and Japan is set to bring tariffs down for cars to zero. As a result, Japanese car makers are moving to focus production in their home country wherever possible.

This could be problematic for the job market in the EU. But for us in Malaysia, things are not likely to suffer from this plant closure in the foreseeable future.
