Toyota Camry 2.5 test drive review

This all new Toyota Camry styling updates is immediately noticeable especially its new nose design with ‘shark like gills’ running across the front. This Camry looks wider and lower with a sporty stance that was missing in previous models.

Cabin Comfort

This all new Camry cabin is spacious, light and airy, with a thoughtful layout and plenty of elbow room. Everything you touch feels right for the asking price. This Camry’s cabin combines the structural beauty of a business machine with luxury materials that maximizes functionality. The combination of metallic surfaces and contrasting soft materials help create a luxury interior which seems more Lexus like in its presentation.

Everything you need seems to be where you want it, and everyone on board will be comfortable. The leather is high quality and perfectly tailored, and the driver’s seat in our test car has multiple power adjustments and 2 memory settings. There is good support for the long drive outstation and the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel provides a good range of adjustment and compliments the driver’s seat movement, so people of every size can find a good driving position.

Controls for audio and climate sit below the center dash vents. Rear-seat passengers will have no complaints even with three adults in. Six-footers can sit comfortably with decent cup holders. Boot space is huge and drivers can bring their friends for a golf game.

Cabin Technology

This Camry has an array of innovative on-board technology, including a Wireless Charging Tray to enable a mobile phone to be charged. Other available technology a comprehensive Multi-information Display, 10-inch colour heads up display, 8-inch DVD Capacitive Touchscreen display with a well balanced sounding 9-speaker JBL audio system, power rear sunshade and more.

Safety Technology

Comes with 7-airbags, Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and all the best braking systems possible. This is why it get a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating.

Driving

This Camry is a well-balanced car with a wide low heft. It sits with authority on the road and the new ‘face’ is shared with the sporty Toyota C-HR and Harrier. This new Camry 2.5 is also big on efficiency, whether that means getting the most power and range from a liter of petrol or for delivering the most interior space for the exterior dimensions or providing the smoothest, quietest ride and good levels of crash protection.

With 184bhp ready to work for the driver this Toyota is no slouch from standstill where it feels relaxed to reach 100km/h in just 9-seconds. Power delivery is smooth and the 6-speed semi automatic gearbox swaps gears with little issue. It is seamless and smooth in its delivery and the engine never feels out of breath when you push past 110km/h on the open highway.

To further enhance driving performance as well as feedback to the driver, a number of updates have been made throughout the structurally sound and highly-refined platform of this Camry. Although this new Camry utilizes basically the same underbody platform of its predecessor, it has been given revamped front engine mounts to the sub-frame structure. This, and the carried over 2.5L engine is why many Malaysian car enthusiast have remarked negatively about the ‘NEW’ in this Camry. We also felt the same before test driving it and now after a weekend with it we are impressed and so will the many others who should take the time to test drive it.

For its asking price and the available safety features and comfort accessories, this Camry seems like a good company car to have and throw in the impeccable Toyota reliability and efficient after sales and the company accountant will be happy they picked this Camry for the long haul.

For the corporate buyer or small businessman, the Camry continues to be the highest default choice as it is easy to drive and live with, well-engineered and well-mannered and takes the lowest depreciation for its segment. Moving five people comfortably or enjoying the long way home, this new Camry is up to the task.
