The New BMW 8-Series Has Been Launched for RM1.1m

The BMW 8-Series is officially in Malaysia in the form of the M850i xDrive Coupe. Just a year ago, the company brought in the 8-Series concept. Maybe that means we’ll see a Malaysian spec BMW X7 launch in July 2019!

Comparison to the original

The first generation 8-Series was a grand tourer powered by either huge, naturally aspirated V8 engines or huger, naturally aspirated V12 engines. BMW’s ambition with the E31 model was to move a product into the market segment above the 6-Series.

What it is now

In contrast, the new 8-Series moves down a notch back conceptually. It moves into the segment previously occupied by the previous 6-Series Coupe and Convertible models. And yes, BMW are even working on an 8-Series Gran Coupe, meaning it’ll soon also sit where the 6-Series Gran Coupe once sat. And yes, the current 6-Series has moved down a notch as well, occupying the space reserved by the previous generation 5-Series GT model. If all these model names are confusing you, we suggest you have a look at our BMW Nomenclature guide.

Having said that, the BMW 8-Series, just like the BMW 6-Series before it is special. It’s still going to be built to a higher standard. It’s the first time BMW are using the 8-Series name in almost 2 decades. And it’s going to be too expensive for most of us to afford.
