The most awesome Porsche 356 build to date

Porsche 356 specialist Rod Emory takes us for a tour of his most ambitious build yet

Who is Rod Emery? Over the years this man and his wife have built over 170 Porsche 356 and 911 ‘Outlaws,’ as they have come to be known. They have also restored and cared for several significant Porsche works cars including a 904-6, a 906, two 908s, a Pooper and Porsche’s first works Le Mans entry and class winner Gmund SL from 1949.

Press Release: Emory Motorsports, based in North Hollywood, has been building, as they put it, “the most iconic, yet personalised Porsche 356s on the planet” since 1996, but none have pushed the boundaries of both engineering and the sensibilities of classic Porsche enthusiasts quite like the 356 RSR.

As shop owner Rod Emory, explains, the RSR“is a no boundaries little hot rod. Too many people are worried about whatothers are going to think. I want to build cars in the way that I want — someare going to love it and some are going to hate it, but at the end of the day Ithink people will appreciate it no matter what because of the level of detail,workmanship and craftsmanship that went into making it.”

The car itself started out as nothing morethan a rusted-out 1960 356 B coupe before Emory and his team got their hands onit; a blank canvas for them to work their magic. “We wanted to pull all thebest pieces from various models and years of Porsche and bring them together ina package that is fun, exciting and kind of mind blowing”, Emory explains.

Using their unique fabrication skills, theteam set about replacing the original car’s rusted bodywork with wider, moreaggressively profiled aluminium panels — certain sections being hand rolled onan English wheel, a process similar to that used by fabricators in the originalGmünd factory.

This all-new body was then carefully matedto a 1990 964 C2’s chassis, allowing Emory to fit aggressive KW coiloversuspension, wider, grippier tyres and larger 964 brakes to ensure the car couldhandle the power from its 911 derived, near 400 HP four-cylinder,twin-turbocharged engine.

That’s right. The engine, just like theremovable aluminium body, is a completely custom design. Designed and built inconjunction with Oregon based Rothsport Racing, the architecture of the motoris all 964, but a new case and crank was developed to allow the team todownsize the engine to four cylinders — it is a 356, after all — while twoGarrett turbos make up for any loss in power.

Those two turbos are mounted in an exposed location at the rear of the car in the style of a Porsche 935. Something, as it turns out, is no accident. As Emory leans down to take a closer look at his creation, he’s keen to point out that the RSR takes inspiration from a number of iconic Porsche models:

And the details don’t stop there. The pedalboards, air intakes and dashboard are all formed from amber fibreglass, like ina 917, there’s a knurled boost control knob from a 935 located to the right ofperiod correct dials, while the custom made bucket seats feature a Nomex stylefabric, similar in aesthetic to that of the material used in the original 908.

The result is a car that pays tribute toPorsche motorsport history while also managing to remain distinctlyCalifornian. Indeed, the location of this sixth running of Luftgekühlt — thedebut event for this special build — is particularly special to Emory, notsimply because he and 5000 of his “best friends” have access to the UniversalStudios backlot. It’s much more than that.

Over the top it may be, but it’s also a beautifully crafted love letter to Porsche models old and new. Something that even the most diehard Porsche purist can be happy about.
