BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe to be Shown Shortly, Rival to CLA

At a press conference earlier this year, BMW announced that the first 2 Series Gran Coupe was being developed for launch in mid-2020. They also said that the car would be shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November… Well, it looks like we’ll have a full picture of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe a little earlier than expected.

That’s because new information indicates BMW is keen to send out press images of the 2 Gran Coupe later today! For now, what we have are additional teaser images. The one shown above is from the first announcement back in March.

The front fascia is reminiscent of the BMW 1 Series hatchback, which was globally revealed in May 2019.

Around back, we see that the 2 Series Gran Coupe takes on the new design language BMW sets for its coupes and SAV coupes. This is characterised by a couple of traits: namely the license plate being moved lowed down to the bumper section, the BMW badge being placed on the same level as the tail lights, and a more horizontally stretched look on the tail lights with less emphasis on the L-shape.

We also know from the aforementioned press conference, that the 2 Series will be built on the front-wheel-drive platform of the 1 Series. It will also share many technologies with the 1 Series. Like other Gran Coupes in the BMW stable, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is imagined as a 4-door coupe alternative to the standard sedan variants available. Think of it as a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which is also front-wheel-drive and built on the same fundamental building blocks as the A-Class hatchback.

For now, that’s all we have on the upcoming 2 Series officially. Here’s a transcript from the March press conference.
