Tata’s SUV Concepts Hint at an Exciting Future For Indian Cars
At the Delhi Auto Expo 2020, Tata went all out with SUV concepts. The first, shown below is the HBX. The HBX is a follow up to the upcoming H2X. Tata say they’ll put this one into production as well, but perhaps with less aggressive road tyres.
It’s built on the ALFA platform and has an interior that is modern and premium with rugged touches. Unique accessories and equipment will be sold alongside this vehicle, including off-road suspension and a roof-rack.
- Length: 3860 mm
- Width: 1900 mm (including mirrors)
- Height: 1880 mm (including roof rack)
- Wheelbase: 2445 mm
Also shown was the Tata Sierra. This is a larger, more futuristic SUV concept. This too is imagined on the ALFA platform, but is imagined as an electric vehicle. There isn’t a B-pillar and the rear doors slide backward. The interior is sparse and utilises high grade materials.
- Length: 4150 mm
- Width: 1820 mm
- Height: 1675 mm
- Wheelbase: 2450 mm
The press release elaborates on both of these vehicles. Check it out below.
Tata HBX Concept
The HBX is the natural extension of the H2X Concept presented by Tata Motors at the 2019 Geneva Motorshow
Continuing with the same Impact 2.0 language, the Tata HBX showcar shown at the 2020 Delhi Motorshow, previews a forthcoming production car with its well-defined dimensions and shapes. The HBX captures the spirit of adventure and inspires in each of us the desire to explore unspoiled nature, away from the urban jungle. Just as the opaque color of the exterior enhances the robustness and attitude of the car to go on any type of terrain.
With its strong stance, solid proportions and sporty design the HBX reflects the dynamic lifestyle of its users.
At 3.9 m in length, the HBX offers ample space and practical loading solutions in an optimized package, to fully enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. Mounted on the ALFA ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced ” platform it offers safety, versatility and allows you to go where other means are afraid to go.
The interior design offers modern functional design with a real emphasis on quality, fit and finish. Overall the command driving position offers the user unparalleled view of the road.
The colors, materials, finishes and textures of the interior have also been carefully designed and selected to adapt to the off-road nature of the vehicle; where we can also find resistant and functional bands on the seats and dashboard: to contain or hook useful and usable elements during excursions in the open air or to fasten during very rough journeys..
Complimented with a set of unique accessories, such as additional lighting, off road suspension combined with a specific kit for navigation/multimedia and an equipped roof-rack are the best you could want from a strong and welcoming car.
The Tata HBX is a pioneering segment product for the brand that will compliment and strengthen Tata’s position as a leader in the crossover market.
Tata Sierra Concept
The Tata Sierra Concept is a modern, progressive and optimistic look into the future of SUV’s. It is a car that asks, what is the future of the SUV? What is the future of mobility? How will this product form the narrative of a sustainable and responsible world. And finally it brings back the romance and spirit of an iconic nameplate in Tata Motors’ history. This is a vision that looks back and sees the future.
The Tata Sierra Concept continues the development of the IMPACT 2.0 design language creating vehicles that look sharp and reflect the contemporary expression of Tata Motors design. It is a 4.1 metre SUV and is the third vehicle based on the new ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced’ (ALFA) Architecture and is a full EV. Outstanding in quality and capturing the essence of the sophisticated customer, the Sierra Concept’s design is dynamic and focused on the outside while providing class leading space and functionality on the inside.
On the exterior, the Tata Sierra is a functional focused design that mirrors the active lifestyle of the customer. Inspired by the original Sierra’s iconic stance and window graphics the Tata Design team have created a product that is modern, progressive and yet captures the spirit of the original. Well balanced, poised and designed with tasteful minimalism. It can function as a rugged all round SUV but also as a mobility solution. The front face echoes the Impact 2.0 humanity line but reinterprets this in a new way expressing the EV identity. There is a balance between ‘tough tech’ along the bottom of the car expressed in the cladding and the platform and powertrain and ‘flush tech’ along the upper which emphasizes quality and seamless surfaces.
The interior design is built on creating a spacious and stress free environment. A space and a rear passenger layout that emphasizes roominess, comfort and safety creating an inviting atmosphere. It offers a unique and pioneering approach to mobility with a signature lounge layout for the rear passengers and the ability of the front passenger to rotate and share in this space. There they will enjoy the large panoramic windows and skylight. The dashboard forgoes the race to add more screens and instead offers a natural wooden tech shelf with the ability for the customer to bring their own device. This adds to the digital detox of the Tata Sierra experience creating an atmosphere where the users interact with each other and enjoy the vista.
The colours materials used throughout the Tata Sierra Concept underline these values. Subtle pearlescent “off white” exterior colour complement front and rear lamp graphics representing modernity and the digital generation without looking aloof. The story continues inside led by the contours of wood grain accentuating gentle curves of light and a welcoming interior. On second reads, you are invited to experience endless visual & tactile elements, subtle Jaali textures, combinations of off-white knit and geometric embossed textile, moss and last but not least etched graphics on recycled leather pieces telling the Sierra story.
The search for utopia. The belief that the human condition can be improved by good design. That is the philosophy behind the Tata Sierra Concept. That is the future of mobility and the future of modern India.
