Maserati MC20 Named China Performance Car of the Year 2021
Maserati’s all-new flagship supercar, the MC20, has recently been named ‘China Performance of the Year 2021’ at the China Car Award ceremony. It was chosen by a panel of 41 judges consisting of leading automotive journalists.
First introduced in September 2020, the MC20 marks the brand’s entrance into a new era. ‘MC’ stands for Maserati Corse while 20 refers to the year it was born. The car is said to be the successor to the MC12, although it doesn’t quite have the same ferocity as its V12-powered predecessor.
That’s okay because the engine powering the MC20 is still a potent one, churning out 630 PS and 730 Nm of torque despite having a lower displacement and six fewer cylinders. Of course, there are two turbochargers, a dry sump system and a Formula 1-derived combustion system and a few other things that help the engine achieve such an impressive power output.
Design-wise, the MC20 is sure to turn heads with its low grille, smooth surfaces and butterfly doors, which are not only beautiful to look at but also improve the car’s ergonomics and provide easy access to and from the cabin. The aerodynamics were designed through over two thousand man-hours in the Dallara Wind Tunnel and more than a thousand CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, resulting in a drag coefficient of below 0.38.
The highly anticipated China Car of the Year 2021 awards were officially announced yesterday in Guangzhou. Closely followed by both industry insiders and consumers, the awards aim to promote the continuous improvement of China’s automotive industry and market. The China Car of the Year 2021 awards were selected by a jury composed of 41 authoritative judges from the automotive media. Based on overall and market performance, as well as other key factors of the candidate models, Maserati’s super sports car MC20 was named as the China Performance Car of the Year 2021.
Developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the historic plant in Modena, MC20 is 100% made in Italy. Its superb looks conceal an uncompromisingly sporty soul, with the new 630 horsepower V6 Nettuno engine that delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds and a top speed over 325 km/h. The patented engine has been developed, designed and built entirely in-house and uses a pre-chamber technology derived from Formula 1 engines. With the new super sports car MC20, the Trident Brand officially started a new era.
