Audi e-tron Arrives In India Before Malaysia

Two Audi e-tron GT models have been launched in India. The company aims to electrify 15% of its portfolio there by 2025.

It looks like Audi India is leapfrogging their counterparts in Malaysia. The Indian market just received two electric Audi models – the e-tron GT and the RS e-tron GT. These are priced at 17,990,000 rupees (RM1,020,558) and 20,499,000 rupees (RM1,162,890) respectively. These electric four-door coupés were designed to go up against the Tesla Model S, which still isn’t available in India. That being said, there are strong rumours that Tesla are aiming at a strong push in the subcontinent by the end of the year.

The real issue we as Malaysians should be concerned with is why both Tesla and Audi are ignoring us for electric car sales. Of course, India has a much, much larger population than Malaysia. However, there was a time not so long ago when Malaysia seemed to have a more affluent middle class. Well, at least we’re still getting locally-assembled Porsches soon. Hopefully there’ll be Taycans in rolling out of Malaysian factories soon.

Audi India’s Electric Ambitions

The Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT are not the first all-electric vehicles on offer in India from the brand with the four rings. The company had previously launched the Audi e-tron 50, e-tron 55 and e-tron Sportback 55. All of these models have completely sold out since launch. Audi India plans to electrify 15% of its product lineup by 2025, but we suppose this includes hybrids and plug-in hybrids as well, not just electric vehicles.

The e-tron and e-tron Sportback models have SUV bodies and were priced from RS 99.99 lakh to RS 1.17 crore, roughly RM49,052,250.00, which is insane. These new electric vehicles seem much more reasonably priced, though they are still expensive. Perhaps some deal has been struck with the Indian government. Who knows.

The e-tron GT has 390kW, which allows it to acccelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.1 seconds while the RS e-tron GT has 475kW. This model does the century sprint in just 3.3 seconds! They both have about 401km of range and charges from 5% to 80% battery life in just 22 minutes using DC Fast charging. Anyone who buys one of these e-Tron GT models in 2021 will get a free AC home wallbox.
