Classic BMW Motorsport Emblem Returns On 50th Anniversary Of BMW M
BMW M is turning 50 years old soon and they’re getting ready to offer fans a special BMW Motorsport emblem.
When it comes to performance brands, few have the weight that BMW M carries. They’ve been in the business of making performance-bred BMWs and every enthusiast knows that they know what they’re doing. Well, that must be partially because they’ve been doing it for so long! BMW M GmbH is turning 50 years old on the 24th of May 2022.
What’s a celebration without giving the fans a something to buy?
To mark the occasion, BMW Group will start to offer BMW M Sport models with an optional BMW Motorsport emblem instead of the standard BMW logo. This will kick off in March 2022, however, orders will be taken starting at the end of January 2022.
What is the classic BMW Motorsport Emblem?
The emblem that will be offered, or the ‘classic BMW Motorsport’ emblem, was first used in 1973. It was the familiar BMW logo but with shifted semicircles in blue, violet and red.
When the BMW M1 debuted, the three colour stripes slanted to the right with the letter M debuted. The BMW M1 became the only vehicle to ever bear both this modern ///M logo and the classic BMW Motorsport emblem.
The colours are said to symbolise the following:
- Bluw: BMW
- Red: racing
- Violet: connection between BMW and Racing
Since then, things have changed. BMW Motorsport GmbH was renamed BMW M GmbH in 1993 and the violet was dropped for dark blue, and who knows what dark blue is supposed to symbolise.
Other things they’re doing to mark the occasion
Besides that, BMW will also happily offer customers 50 iconic BMW M paint finishes for selected models in 2022. These colours include, but are not limited to:
- Dakar Yellow
- Fire Orange
- Daytona Violet
- Macao Blue
- Imola Red
- Frozen Marina Bay Blue
BMW M GmbH are also anticipating the following in 2022:
- the launch of the BMW M3 Touring
- a special version of the BMW M4 Coupé
- A successor to the BMW M2
- The launch of the first ever electrified high-performance model (probably the X8 M)
Events that will be held to celebrate their 50th anniversary include performances at:
- Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2022
- Goodwood Festival of Speed
- Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach
- 24 Hours Nürburgring race
