JPJ Says It Gained Over RM20 Million From M_M Number Plate Sales
The M1M number plate also apparently fetched the highest bid at RM622,000
Another day, another number plate bid sets the internet ablaze, this time we will look into the “M_M” series of number plates, which now, has even seen one of these plates fetch upwards of RM600,000. Why some people are so obsessed with this is beyond me but let’s just dive right in.
The road transport department (JPJ) has revealed that it has collected over RM20 million from the sale of the special “M_M” series vehicle registration number plates which were offered in conjunction with this year’s Merdeka Day celebration and what better way to show off one’s patriotism than spending ludicrous money on plates, eh?
Moreover, JPJ has also said that the registration plate M1M fetched the highest bid at RM622,000, followed by M5M at RM500,000. Meanwhile, the number plate M8M secured the third-highest bid at RM450,000, followed by M9M securing RM402,004 and M6M which went for RM350,000.
JPJ said in a statement, “The ‘M_M’ series has received an outstanding response from bidders.” It added that 25,033 individuals participated in the bidding for this series, with 6,872 individuals successfully winning bids for their respective registration numbers.
On top of that, JPJ has also noted the numbers which received the most number of bids. They are M101M with 39 bids, M155M with 33 bids, M51M which secured 32 bids, M313M which had 31 bids and M39M which had 28 bids. Honestly, these numbers are pretty mild as far as bids go for number plates.
The bidding ran from 31 August 2023 to 4 September 2023 after the sale was launched on 29 August 2023 by transport minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook. Successful bidders were notified on 5 September 2023. Loke was also reported to have said that the “M_M” series reflected both the phrases “Malaysia Merdeka” and “Malaysia Madani.”
Well, there you have it. No other country is as patriotic as Malaysia as far as number plate bids go so this bid is just the latest in a long list of things we Malaysians will willingly do just to show our love for our country. After all, there are no more effective ways to be patriotic than by spending lavishly on luxuries like number plates, right?
