4th Gen Lancia Ypsilon Is An EV And The Brand’s 1st New Car Since 2011

The Lancia Ypsilon is now an EV and might be the first of many for the Italian brand.

For the longest time, Lancia seemed to be a brand destined to do one rebadge after another. The once-inspiring Italian brand with motoring pedigree had fallen on hard times and was left to tackling extreme niches with PSA-engineered platforms. That all kind of changes now with the introduction of the 4th generation Ypsilon.

Lancia Ypsilon 4th Gen Powertrain & Platform

The Ypsilon is a B-segment hatchback with crossover elements. It is based on the Stellantis e-CMP gen 2 platform which underpins cars like the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008. A single electric motor provides power to the front wheels with 156hp available and a maximum range of 403km from its 51kWh battery. Fast charging from 20% to 80% takes just 24 minutes and this translates to about 100km of range in 10 minutes under the best conditions.

Lancia’s New Pu+Ra Design Philosophy

With the brand’s rebirth comes a new design language dubbed “Pu+Ra” (Pure and Radical). Lancia claims the Ypsilon’s share is inspired by the soft sensual shapes of the Aurelia and Flaminia.

Rounded full-LED headlights are a callback to the Stratos while the model name in handwritten font around back is inspired by some of Lancia’s historic cars. Lancia is also debuting a new logo, which reworks all the classic elements – the steering wheel, flag, shield, lance and inscription in a more simplified form. You’ll find this new logo on the C-pillar alongside hidden door handles for the rear doors.

Ypsilon Interior & Tech

The 4th gen Lancia Ypsilon features a modern interior with dual 10.25″ screens serving as digital instrument cluster and infotainment. There’s also keyless entry and start, a wireless charging pad and Apple Carplay/Android Auto. There are also three USB-C ports. There are power adjustable, heated seats with massaging function too.

Thanks to shared Stellantis tech, the Ypsilon comes with Level 2 Autonomous Driving as standard and this includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering as well as Traffic Jam Assist with Stop&Go function.

Where Will The Lanci Ypsilon Be Sold?

This new model will reintroduce the Lancia brand to the rest of Europe with 70 new dealers planned over the next few years. Outside of Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain and then Germany will all get the new Ypsilon.

To start, Italy will get a limited edition version which involves a collaboration with Cassina – an Italian furniture brand. 1906 units will be made (a tribute to Lancia’s founding year) and this “Edizione Limitata Cassina” version will feature soft blue velvet in a “cannelloni” pattern with double stitching all made of 100% recycled yarn.

This upholstery will be featured on the seats, door panels, and dashboard. There’s also a special “tavolino” element. It’s essentially a small table that functions as a storage tray where one may be able to place a personal-sized pizza for that authentic Italian experience.
