MACC RM4.5 Billion Probe In Government Car Leasing Company
After probing this Tan Sri for his car collection, is SPANCO in trouble with the MACC too?
It has been reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) raided the residence of a businessman with the title Tan Sri yesterday for an investigation into allegations of corruption involving the procurement and management of the government’s fleet of vehicles worth RM4.5 billion. Is his company now also in trouble because of him?
It was also reported that four other companies were also raided in response to this and that over 100 private accounts and companies under the companies’ control were also reportedly obtained by the MACC for further investigation. While all this probing was going on, however, no account freezes were imposed. Strange
Moreover, it was also reported that MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and the MACC Investigation Division senior director Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim had confirmed the raid, making this news completely credible. It also means that shady businesses will need to be more careful from here on out if they want to keep up their hanky-panky.
The concession to supply and manage government vehicles has been held by SPANCO Sdn Bhd since 1993. However, after the contract ended in 2019, an open tender was launched. Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd later formed a consortium and secured the contract through a Letter of Intent (LOI) in that year.
Obviously, though, SPANCO, or more likely just the Tan Sri titled businessman in charge, decided that all these years after the contract had ended, he simply needed to go out with one last hoorah and it was almost as if he wanted the world to see it too. Well, regardless of what his intent was, it is not working out well for him now.
On top of that, in July of 2023, Berjaya’s founder, Vincent Tan, filed a lawsuit against the Finance Ministry and SPANCO regarding the terminated LOI, alleging that the contract was awarded to SPANCO despite their higher bid. This whole ordeal probably feels like Karma taking its toll to the founder of Berjaya and we couldn’t be happier for him.
In fact, these very claims are what prompted calls for an MACC investigation, but there were no developments until the recent raid. Hopefully now, with more evidence and even more eyes watching, we can actually see some justice be served for once. Or perhaps the greed of man will prevail once more and we won’t see anything come of these raids.
