BMW Concept Skytop Is A Throwback To The Z8 With Updated Styling

The BMW Concept Skytop takes inspiration from the BMW Z8 and BMW 503.

Think open top BMW and the first car that probably comes to mind is the Z4. Of all the ‘Z’ cars ever made, the Z4 was the only nameplate to survive being culled after just one generation. Now it looks like BMW might want to bring another Z car in for a sequel with their latest pre-production showcase – the Skytop concept.

It was shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este classic car event on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. Whether or not the car goes into production is still unanswered. If it does, it’ll likely be in very limited numbers.

Exterior Design: Sporty Elegance

The Concept Skytop’s taut, sculpted exterior melds timeless elegance with a distinctly sporty profile. Precise character lines direct the eye rearwards, accentuating the muscular proportions. Wing-like door shoulders seamlessly integrate the door handles.

The long bonnet, illuminated kidney grille, and retracted rear pay homage to BMW’s iconic roadsters like the Z8. A prominent spline extends through the interior and over the tailgate, emphasizing the dynamic silhouette.

Custom LED headlights showcase BMW’s cutting-edge lighting technology in the slimmest profile yet. At the rear, clean flat taillights complement the Skytop’s purist design language.

Luxurious Interior Craftsmanship

Inside, brogue-stitched leather surfaces in a rich reddish-brown hue create a sophisticated, spacious ambiance. Crafted in BMW’s saddlery, the upholstery flows elegantly into the exterior color scheme whether the roof is open or closed. Crystal inserts add a touch of luxury to the cockpit.

Behind the two seats, a leather-wrapped roll-over bar integrates side fins and a retractable glass rear window. The two removable roof panels stow neatly in the trunk when open-air driving is desired.

V8 Power Under The Hood

Like its iconic Z8 predecessor, the Concept Skytop packs BMW’s range-topping V8 engine, promising thrilling performance to match its svelte looks.
