Vietnam’s VinFast VF 3 comes with free charging in Indonesia with terms and conditions attached.
There has been talk of Vietnam’s VinFast entering our market for some time, but so far nothing had materialised. Over in Indonesia though, we see things moving much faster. Last year in April, the brand opened a dealer store in West Java and put the VF5 and VF e34 on sale there. Yesterday at the Indonesia International Motor Show 2025, they introduced the VF 3 – a boxy 3-door compact SUV that’s pure electric – and yes, it’s right hand drive.
The pricing of this little electric Jimny alternative is pretty attractive at 227,650,000 IDR or around RM62,000 when converted at today’s exchange rate. What’s interesting is that they’re also throwing in free charging for all owners of the VF 3 across charging stations operated by V-GREEN across Indonesia. This free charging policy is active for VF 3 users until the 1st of March 2028. Previously launched VF 5 and VF e34 users will also enjoy free charging until the end of 2027. The company says there will be 30,000 VinFast charging portals around the country by the end of 2025.
The VinFast VF 3 is very compact, measuring just 3,190mm by 1,679mm by 1,652mm. It has a ground clearance of 175mm and is fitted with 16″ alloy wheels. Despite looking like a boxy off-roader, this is more of a 4-seater city car with a rear-wheel drive set-up and a mere 43 horsepower, 110Nm motor. The VF 3 has a top speed of 100km/h but they don’t disclose how long it takes to get to that speed. To 50km/h from a standstill, it takes 5.3 seconds. Interestingly on the Indonesian brochure, we learn that the infotainment unit is 10 inches across and that the roof can take 50kg of luggage though there aren’t roof rails.
It’s also not the kind of car you want to be stuck in a jungle with as the range is just 215km on the NEDC protocol. Charging up from 10% to 70% with a DC fast charger takes 36 minutes though they did not disclose the maximum charging rate.
Still, as an urban commuter at around the price of Myvi, it could be attractive to some buyers as a second car. It comes in a handful of colour options – Infinity Blanc, Crimson Red, Zenith Grey, Summer Yellow, Urban Mint, Sky Blue and Rose Pink. These last four colour options are paired to a white roof for a two-tone look. There’s also the Jet Black colour options, which is exclusive to the Indonesian market.
In Indonesia, all VinFast electric vehicles get a 7-year/160,000km vehicle warranty and a 8-year/unlimited mileage warranty for the battery.
