TTDI Residents Voice Concerns Over EV Charger Installations Reducing Public Parking

So is the Priority for TTDI public parking or EV chargers? Which is it for you?

The Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) Residents Association has raised concerns regarding the recent installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers in their neighbourhood, citing that it worsens the already limited public parking situation in the area. So is the priority for the TTDI representatives more public parking or EV chargers?

Speaking to Malay Mail, association spokesperson Khairudin Rahim emphasized that residents are not opposed to the broader shift toward electric vehicles or the idea of encouraging sustainable transportation. However, they are frustrated by the placement of these chargers along Lorong Rahim Kajai 13 and Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad, locations that are already heavily burdened by a shortage of available parking spaces.

Moreover, Khairudin said, “These areas are already facing a serious lack of parking. We’re not against EV chargers. In fact, we welcome green initiatives. But why were these chargers installed at the expense of scarce public parking spots? It feels inconsiderate to the needs of current residents.”

Khairudin also questioned the practicality of this move for a residential area like TTDI, where many EV owners reportedly charge their vehicles at home. He noted that most homeowners in the neighbourhood who own electric cars already have private chargers installed in their garages.

“In addition, there are private facilities nearby — such as the Petronas station — that already offer EV charging services. This raises the question of whether more public space should have been sacrificed for this purpose,” he also added.

On top of that, the concern mainly revolves around how the newly installed chargers could further reduce access to convenient parking for the general public. While the EV chargers spotted in the area are not yet operational, residents worry that the adjacent parking bays may eventually become designated exclusively for EV use.

A Malay Mail check at the site on 1 July 2025, confirmed the installation of several new chargers, although they remain inactive for now. It’s still unclear how access to these spaces will be regulated once the system is up and running.

In response to the issue, the TTDI Residents Association is preparing to submit a formal letter to Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) this week, requesting official clarification on the policy and decision-making process behind the installations. Parking has long been a contentious issue in TTDI, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most densely populated residential areas, with residents consistently voicing concerns over insufficient space.
