3rd Generation Nissan Leaf Looks SO Much Better Than The Last

The 3rd generation Nissan Leaf is such a huge upgrade in the looks department.

It’s a shame that the electric car revolution in Malaysia was not spearheaded by the Nissan Leaf way back in 2013 when the first generation model was introduced to our market. Then, the Malaysian government was more obsessed with hybrid powertrains and gave massive incentives to manufacturers to keep prices of those types of vehicles down, resulting in sub-RM100K hybrids like the Honda CR-Z. While the 2nd generation Nissan Leaf also failed to make an impact on the market here due to its conservative styling and lack of ambition, we feel like the 3rd time might just be the charm if Nissan is hungry enough.

The 3rd generation Nissan Leaf was previewed a couple of months back and this was followed by talks of a Mitsubishi-derived version of the EV too. Now we’re finally getting full details and loads of photos that properly flesh out a picture of what is probably the only THIRD generation electric vehicle in the world.

I mean, just think about it – the Nissan Leaf was first shown before the Tesla Model S and still soldiers on today with nearly 700,000 units sold worldwide.

This new Nissan Leaf has been redesigned and re-engineered to deliver longer range, faster charging, and advanced technology. With a maximum range of up to 604km and the ability to recover 417km in 30 minutes through 150kW DC fast charging, it provides a practical alternative to combustion vehicles. Highway driving delivers over 330km at 130km/h, making long-distance travel achievable with minimal downtime.

Designed in Atsugi, Japan, the new LEAF has a sleek aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of 0.25. Features such as flush door handles, a flowing roofline, and sculpted surfaces optimise performance and efficiency.

Despite its compact exterior, the interior is spacious and versatile, offering 437 litres of cargo space with a power liftgate and roof rail options. High-quality finishes, a panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting enhance comfort, while multiple wheel and colour options allow customisation.

Built on the CMF-EV platform, shared with the Nissan Ariya, the LEAF combines agile handling with comfort. ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link, e-Pedal Step, adaptive regenerative braking, and a suite of safety systems support confident driving. Advanced camera systems provide enhanced visibility, while Intelligent Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist add reassurance.

The LEAF integrates seamlessly with digital life. Google built-in offers Maps, Assistant, and Play Store on twin 14.3-inch screens. Drivers can manage navigation, climate, and media by voice, while the NissanConnect Services app enables remote access to charging, cabin pre-conditioning, and journey planning. Over-the-air updates keep systems current. A BOSE® premium audio system with a headrest speaker enhances the in-cabin experience.

The vehicle also introduces flexibility with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing users to power devices such as camping equipment directly from the car. It is future-ready with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatibility, supporting sustainable energy integration.

Intelligent battery thermal management optimises charging efficiency and works with Google Maps to pre-condition the battery before fast-charging stops.

The new LEAF will be produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK as part of the EV36Zero initiative, which combines renewable energy production with localised battery supply.
