The BYD Seal 6 DM-i is a hybrid wagon aimed at the European market but might make fans here.
BYD has just launched the Seal 6 DM-i, a stylish new sedan and wagon that combines the brand’s latest Super Hybrid DM technology with everyday practicality. While the European launch highlights the brand’s global expansion, the Seal 6 DM-i also raises an interesting question for our market: could this be the hybrid model that finally gets BYD Malaysia to diversify beyond its all-electric lineup?

A Wagon Body Style for Practical Enthusiasts
One of the standout features of the Seal 6 DM-i is its availability as a wagon — BYD’s first for Europe. The Seal 6 DM-i Touring offers up to 1535 litres of boot space with the seats folded, making it far more practical than most C-segment rivals. For car enthusiasts in Malaysia who often say they’d love to see more wagons on our roads, this model could be a true test of whether buyers are willing to “put their money where their mouth is.”

Super Hybrid Technology With Colossal Range
Under the skin, the Seal 6 DM-i uses BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i system, combining a Blade Battery, dual electric motors, and a highly efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine. This setup allows the car to drive like a pure EV most of the time, while the petrol engine acts as a generator when needed.

- Electric-only range: up to 105 km (WLTP)
- Total combined range: up to 1505 km on a single charge and a full tank
- Efficiency: as low as 1.5L/100km weighted fuel consumption
Performance remains practical but brisk, with 0–100 km/h times under nine seconds and a 180 km/h top speed.

Packed With Tech and Comfort
Inside, the Seal 6 DM-i is every bit as advanced as BYD’s EV lineup. Buyers get a large infotainment screen (12.8 or 15.6 inches depending on variant), wireless charging, and a spacious cabin wrapped in vegan leather. Safety is also comprehensive, with seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera as standard.

Could BYD Malaysia Introduce a Hybrid?
So far, BYD Malaysia has focused exclusively on pure electric vehicles like the Dolphin, Atto 3, Atto 2, M6, Sealion 7 and Seal. But with the Seal 6 DM-i proving that hybrids can deliver EV-like refinement with the long range Malaysians value for intercity travel, there may be space in the lineup for a model like this. Plus, many of BYD’s rivals are already selling PHEVs and hybrids, showing the Malaysian market’s willingness to adopt to different powertrain options from Chinese automakers.

If BYD decides to expand into hybrids here, the Seal 6 DM-i — especially in its wagon form — could carve out a niche for practical, tech-packed family cars that stand out from the SUV crowd.
