Past couple of years we are seeing weekly reports of cars on fire, more petrol powered cars
Even last week our reader shared with us a rather new compact sedan on fire along the Kesas Highway heading towards Shah Alam.
This is not something unusual as we have been shared almost weekly, pictures of petrol powered (NOT Electric Vehicles) on fire. Some rather new cars and some older cars. Our checks have shown that leaking fuel hoses, older fuel lines and improper installations of accessories are some of the causes.
Also, there is a new culprit. Dashcams!

It has been said that some dashcams can start car related fires due to improper installation, especially concerning wiring and the use of lithium-ion battery packs in some models, which can swell and ignite under the intense heat of a parked car’s interior.
Improperly sized fuses, faulty wiring, or connecting a dashcam with a battery to a constant power source without low-battery protection can create high heat that leads to a fire hazard.
What Causes Dashcam Related Fires?
Battery Packs: Some dashcams use lithium-ion batteries instead of supercapacitors. These batteries can expand and ignite in the extreme heat of a parked car.
Improper Wiring & Installation: Poorly installed or modified wiring, using incorrect fuse sizes, or connecting the dashcam to a constant power source without proper protection can overheat, melt, and cause a fire.
Overheating: Dashcams left running in parking mode, especially in high-temperature environments, can overheat, and this prolonged heat can be a fire hazard.
Faulty Components: Using cheap or “dodgy” components for the dashcam or its installation can increase the risk of overheating and fire.
How to Prevent These Fires
Use Supercapacitor Dashcams: Opt for dashcams that use supercapacitors for power storage instead of lithium-ion batteries, as they are safer in high-heat conditions.
Professional Installation: Have your dashcam installed by authorized and qualified professionals. Avoid third-party workshops that may lack the expertise for proper wiring and installation.
Check Fuses and Wiring: Ensure the hardwiring kit, if used, comes with an inline fuse and that the fuse is correctly sized for the dashcam’s low power draw.
Use Heat-Resistant Dashcams: Choose models specifically designed for high-heat environments, as modern dashcams often have features to withstand high temperatures inside a car.
Manage Parking Mode: Be cautious with parking mode, especially if your dashcam uses a battery. Ensure sufficient power and monitor for overheating.
Causes of ICE Vehicle Fires in Malaysia
Electrical Wiring: A staggering 70% of vehicle fires are attributed to problems within the vehicle’s wiring system.
Improper Modifications & Accessories: Adding excessive or unauthorised accessories to a vehicle can compromise the wiring and lead to fires, according to the fire department.
Flammable Materials: Storing flammable items, such as power banks, lighters, and aerosol cans, inside the vehicle can increase the risk of fire.
Neglect and Lack of Maintenance: Inadequate maintenance and neglect can exacerbate electrical problems and increase the likelihood of a fire.
