The End Of The Roadster Era: BMW Z4 Gets A ‘Final Edition’ Sendoff

The BMW Z4 is being discontinued without a successor.

The BMW Z4 is driving into the sunset. Production of the current, third-generation roadster will officially end in March 2026, concluding a lineage of open-top sports cars that began over two decades ago. To mark this farewell, BMW is offering fans a time-limited opportunity to order a distinctive, fully equipped BMW Z4 Final Edition, available for order starting in late January 2026.

The end of the Z4 also spells the end for its platform mate, the Toyota GR Supra (A90), which will also cease production in March 2026. It was said that the third generation Z4 may not have been justifiable for BMW had Toyota not stepped in to share development costs.

Exclusive Farewell Styling

The Final Edition celebrates the Z4’s dynamic flair with a handful of exclusive features:

  • Exterior Paint: The signature distinguishing feature is the exclusive Frozen Matt Black paint finish, though customers can opt for other Z4 colors at no extra cost.
  • Trim: All Final Edition models include the M High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim for a darker, more aggressive look.
  • Brakes: The M Sport brake system, included in the package, features striking High-gloss Red calipers.
  • Interior Accents: The cabin adopts a dramatic aesthetic with contrasting red seams running across the instrument panel, center console, door trims, and M Sport seats.
  • Upholstery: Seats are finished in Vernasca Leather/Alcantara.
  • M Sport Touches: An M Alcantara steering wheel with matching contrasting seams and specially engraved door sill strips enhance exclusivity.

Availability and Powertrains

The Final Edition package is available for the entire Z4 lineup, regardless of the chosen transmission:

  • Z4 sDrive20i: The entry-level model delivering 197 horsepower
  • Z4 sDrive30i: Delivering 250 horsepower
  • Z4 M40i: The range-topper powered by a 340 horsepower six-cylinder in-line engine. This model has been offered with a manual transmission since the 2024 Pure Impulse Edition, serving as a final nod to purists.

The Final Edition trim costs 4,200 euros for the sDrive30i and M40i (as the M Sport package is already standard). For the sDrive20i, the package is priced at 7,400 euros, which includes the mandatory M Sport package.

A “Collector’s Item” (Or Just a Car?)

While the Z4 lineage has a proud history, following icons like the BMW 507 and Z8, the press release does make a rather presumptive suggestion. It notes that this special version “may well become a collectors’ item”. Most genuine future classics earn their collectible status through scarcity, competition success, or sheer, unforgettable performance, not because the manufacturer had to remind buyers of its potential future value. This feels like just a MOSTLY cosmetic performance package.

That being said, we’ll miss the Z4. The end of the BMW roadster era marks the beginning of what feels like German automotive austerity, with the fun cars being kept for the 1% in the form of ultra-limited edition models like the Skytop Concept.
