The New Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ Marks The Return Of 6 Cylinders

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ returns six-cylinder power.

Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the latest evolution of its performance SUV lineup: the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+. Engineered in Affalterbach to deliver an emotional driving experience, this new model bridges the gap between high-revving track capabilities and the refined comfort expected of a modern luxury vehicle. Available in both SUV and Coupé body styles, the GLC 53 is designed for drivers who refuse to compromise on character or capability. More importantly, this model marks a reverse in the trend of downsizing and electrification in the AMG performance space.

Redeveloped Six-Cylinder Power

At the heart of the GLC 53 is a comprehensively further developed 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo engine. This unit features twin charging via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an upgraded electric auxiliary compressor. The results are formidable: a rated output of 449 hp and a maximum torque of 600 Nm.

For those seeking an extra burst of speed, an overboost function allows the torque to climb to 640 Nm for ten seconds. This powertrain enables the SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. To manage this power, the engine is paired with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, known for its lightning-fast shift times and double-declutching capability in “Sport+” mode.

Drift Mode and Dynamic Handling

For the first time in an AMG SUV, the GLC 53 features an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential equipped with Drift Mode. This is part of the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, which allows the vehicle to act as a purely rear-wheel-drive machine on closed tracks.

The standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive ensures fully variable power distribution, providing optimal traction on everything from dry asphalt to slippery surfaces. Combined with standard rear-axle steering (up to 2.5 degrees), the GLC 53 offers significantly more agile turn-in at low speeds and improved stability during high-speed lane changes.

Golden Accents and Exclusive Design

To celebrate the market launch, Mercedes-AMG is offering an exclusive “Golden Accents” package, limited to the first year of production. This package combines Obsidian Black Metallic or Graphite Grey Magno paintwork with numerous exterior and interior details finished in Techgold.

Highlights of this limited edition include 21-inch AMG forged wheels with Techgold rim flanges and black brake calipers with white AMG logos. Inside, the cabin is a tech-forward sanctuary featuring AMG sports seats in black leather with contrasting decorative stitching and carbon fiber trim elements woven with metallic threads.

The Legacy of Innovation

The launch of the GLC 53 coincides with Mercedes-Benz celebrating “140 Years of Innovation.” Since the invention of the automobile in 1886, the brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible. The new GLC 53 carries this heritage forward, utilizing a 48-volt on-board electrical system with a second-generation integrated starter-generator (ISG). This hybrid integration provides an additional 17 kW of boost while enabling seamless gliding and recuperation functions for improved efficiency.

Even though it’s still electrified, the return of the six cylinder to an AMG model is quite exciting for enthusiasts. The AMG GLC models have been a really good blend of performance and luxury and you can read our reviews of both the 6 cylinder and newer 4 cylinder hybrid versions.
