The Path Forward For Electric Car Manufacturers
Car design naturally moves through cycles of experimentation and refinement. As EV manufacturing matures, user feedback and safety regulations are steering the industry back toward intuitive, human-centric design. While software updates can address interface issues, physical buttons, dependable door releases, and balanced driver alerts remain irreplaceable for daily driving usability.
Today, many car manufacturers have taken consumer feedback seriously and adapted their new models with updates that make sense.

For example, having Capacitive Touch Buttons on Steering Wheels
Replacing solid, press-able steering wheel controls with glossy, touch-capacitive pads is another trend caused widespread frustration. Capacitive pads lack tactile separation, making unintended inputs far too common. Drivers frequently trigger volume changes, activate voice assistants, or alter cruise control settings simply by resting their hands on the wheel or turning through tight corners.
Industry Correction: Automakers like Volkswagen, BMW and Audi have publicly acknowledged customer dissatisfaction with touch-sensitive controls and are actively returning to physical tactile buttons and scroll wheels on steering wheels across new lineups.
Then there was the issues with Flush and Electronic Pop-Out Door Handles
We highlighted this on www.dsf.my a few times as we had issues with some of the handles, NOT popping out and NOT working properly.
To squeeze out minimal improvements in aerodynamic efficiency and present a futuristic silhouette, automakers widely adopted flush, motorized door handles that were much talked about and even advertised proudly at new car launches. But today, it is a failure on so many levels.
These handles present several practical issues. They can freeze shut in sub-zero winter temperatures, require manual explanation for unfamiliar passengers, and create severe safety risks if electrical power fails during an emergency which leaves them shut tight as they are powered (the power can also fail). Did you know that flush or retractable door handles rely on electrical power to pop out. If a severe crash causes a power failure, occupants can get trapped inside and rescuers may struggle to open the doors from the outside.
Regulatory Shift: Following safety incidents involving power failures during accidents, regulators are pushing back. Industry leaders are actively shifting away from fully electronic latches in favor of conventional mechanical releases. In fact in August 2026, China ordered a historic recall of approximately 4.3 million vehicles, including nearly 3 million Tesla (including Xiaomi, Leapmotor) cars due to safety risks linked to flush and electronic hidden door handles.
