Will the Zeekr X Door Handle Recall Affect Malaysia?

Zhejiang Geely Automobile Co., Ltd. has formally filed a product recall plan with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), affecting 92,658 units of the Zeekr 007 and Zeekr X produced between 1 March 2023 and 21 May 2026.

The recall targets the vehicle’s interior mechanical emergency door release handle. Because the manual latch closely matches the surrounding interior trim colors, it can prove difficult for occupants to quickly identify and operate in low-light or high-stress situations. In severe crash scenarios involving a total low-voltage (12V) electrical failure, this ergonomic issue could hinder emergency cabin escape and delay external rescue operations.

To resolve the defect, Zeekr will affix high-visibility warning labels to interior door releases free of charge, alongside an over-the-air (OTA) software update that automatically lowers all power windows upon collision detection. With the Zeekr X already on sale in Malaysia as a core premium electric crossover, local buyers are naturally asking: will Zeekr Malaysia carry out a matching recall or service campaign locally?

Precedent in the Malaysian EV Space: XPENG’s Swift Response

The prospect of a local campaign is strong, especially given how competing Chinese electric vehicle distributors have handled domestic safety filings.

Just recently, Bermaz XPENG Malaysia demonstrated swift accountability by initiating a voluntary local recall for the XPENG X9 electric MPV, matching a campaign initiated in China over front air suspension springs. Bermaz not only offered free hardware replacements but also extended suspension warranty coverage to eight years to ensure complete consumer confidence.

As Chinese EV marques establish long-term roots in Malaysia, transparent aftersales governance has quickly become a critical benchmark for brand trust.

What a Malaysian Zeekr Campaign Would Involve

Because the Zeekr X sold in Malaysia is imported as a fully built-up (CBU) model from Geely’s manufacturing plants in China, units delivered to local customers share identical interior door architectures, trim components, and SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electronics.

If Zeekr Malaysia follows global directives, the remediation process will likely be straightforward and non-invasive:

  • Over-the-Air (OTA) Safety Logic: The primary functional fix—an automated window-lowering strategy following airbag deployment—can be deployed remotely via Zeekr’s built-in 4G/5G telematics without requiring a workshop visit.
  • Physical Indicator Labels: High-contrast warning decals around the manual release levers can be applied during routine scheduled servicing or during a brief visit to an authorized Zeekr service center.

Looking Ahead for Malaysian Owners

While Zeekr Malaysia has yet to issue a formal local bulletin regarding the door release mechanism, the software-driven nature of the fix ensures that any rollout can be handled swiftly.
