Volvo Cars to Lead Android Automotive Innovation with Google Gemini Integration

Volvo expands partnership with Google to pioneer Gemini AI and new Android car OS features

Volvo Cars has officially expanded its strategic partnership with Google, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of Android Automotive OS. This collaboration is designed to accelerate the rollout of next-generation Android features in Volvo models equipped with Google built-in. As part of the agreement, Volvo will now serve as one of Google’s primary reference hardware platforms for future in-car Android development.

Announced at Google I/O 2025, the most anticipated highlight of this partnership is the integration of Google Gemini, Google’s latest and most advanced conversational AI. This upgrade will replace the existing Google Assistant in Volvo vehicles, offering a more powerful, intuitive, and context-aware voice experience for drivers.

With Google Gemini built into the Android Automotive OS, Volvo drivers will be able to engage in natural voice conversations while on the road. Gemini can help compose and translate messages, search through the car’s digital owner’s manual, and provide detailed information about destinations. This level of interaction is designed to reduce driver distraction, lower cognitive load, and enhance overall safety—without compromising convenience or control.

Volvo Leads as Google’s Automotive Innovation Partner

Beyond Gemini integration, Volvo Cars will now play a key role in shaping the future of Android Automotive OS as a reference hardware platform for Google. This means Volvo’s latest vehicles will be used as a benchmark for developing and testing new Android features before they are rolled out to other automotive partners. As a result, Volvo customers will enjoy early access to Android system updates, enhanced infotainment capabilities, and cutting-edge connected car features.

This expanded partnership underscores Volvo’s commitment to delivering a human-centric, digitally connected driving experience. It also aligns with the brand’s long-term vision of creating software-defined vehicles that are always up to date.

“With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars,” said Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars.

By working closely with Google, Volvo positions itself at the forefront of the automotive industry’s digital transformation, reinforcing its reputation for safety, innovation, and driver-focused technology.
