Bus Cap and BYD Malaysia Partner To Bring Electric Bus & Commercial Vehicle Hub

Bus Cap and BYD Malaysia will bring electric busses and electric commercial vehicles to the country in a big way.

Bursa Malaysia-listed bus body manufacturer Bus Cap Berhad has entered into a strategic collaboration with BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd to co-develop a Malaysia-based New Energy Commercial Vehicle (NECV) platform.

Formalized through an exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen, China, the partnership aims to localize the assembly and manufacturing of electric buses and commercial vehicles in Perak, establishing Malaysia as a regional hub for green fleet electrification.

Localizing Electric Bus Manufacturing in Perak

The collaboration combines BYD’s global leadership in battery technology and electrified powertrains with Bus Cap’s extensive experience in domestic bus body design, chassis integration, and localized commercial vehicle fabrication.

Key areas of cooperation outlined under the strategic partnership include:

  • Localized Assembly Facilities: Setting up dedicated assembly and manufacturing operations in Perak to produce electric city buses, intercity coaches, and commercial fleet chassis.
  • Technology Integration: Integrating BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery systems and commercial EV powertrain technologies into purpose-built vehicle bodies tailored for Southeast Asian operating conditions.
  • After-Sales and Fleet Maintenance: Establishing comprehensive service and maintenance frameworks to support municipal transit operators, tour agencies, and logistics companies transitioning to zero-emission fleets.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Green Mobility and Public Transit Roadmap

The initiative directly aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, which mandate aggressive electrification targets across public transportation networks and commercial logistics corridors.

By localizing EV bus assembly in Perak, the joint venture is structured to deliver several strategic advantages:

  • Lowering Capital Expenditure: Reducing acquisition and logistical costs for local fleet operators through domestic assembly compared to fully built-up (CBU) imports.
  • Supply Chain Localization: Generating high-skilled engineering opportunities and increasing local component sourcing across the domestic automotive vendor ecosystem.
  • Public Fleet Modernization: Providing local transit concessionaires and regional stage bus operators with reliable, locally supported electric bus options to replace aging diesel fleets.

Commercial Momentum in the Regional EV Sector

As regional demand for decarbonized public transit and commercial transport surges across ASEAN, the partnership between Bus Cap and BYD Malaysia positions both entities to capture upcoming fleet renewal contracts and government tenders.

By anchoring electric bus assembly and new energy commercial vehicle development in Perak, the alliance marks an important milestone in transforming Malaysia from a pure consumer of electric vehicles into an active manufacturing and assembly hub for the wider region.
