Honda Expands Green Energy Ecosystem: Investment in OMC Power to Launch Battery-Powered UPS Leasing in India

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced a strategic investment in OMC Power in India, aiming to launch a pioneering leasing business in January 2026 for Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) devices utilizing its portable Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries.

The investment is designed to contribute to a stable power supply in India, where rapid economic growth has outpaced reliable grid access, leading to the widespread use of polluting diesel generators as emergency backups.

Repurposing EV Batteries for Energy Stability

The core of this initiative is the intelligent repurposing of electric motorcycle batteries. Honda has been conducting demonstration testing of the UPS device using the swappable Honda Mobile Power Pack e: in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India since 2023. This initiative confirmed that the secondary use of these batteries can contribute to stable energy supply while also achieving a reduced environmental impact compared to diesel generators.

The resulting model is a circular energy solution that extends the lifecycle of EV batteries, supporting Honda’s global vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Leasing Business Model

For the new leasing business commencing in January 2026, Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt. Ltd. (HEID), a Honda subsidiary, will supply the Mobile Power Pack e: to OMC Power.

OMC Power will then package the battery with its UPS device and offer it for lease sales to:

  • Households
  • Small businesses
  • Schools and other facilities

The UPS device works by charging the battery with grid electricity when available. The charged battery then supplies electricity when the grid power is unstable or down, allowing customers to use power more stably without interruption.

Strategic Alliance for India’s Energy Transition

This strategic alliance supports India’s clean energy transition by enabling the large-scale deployment of storage-based solutions for mini-grid stabilization, telecom infrastructure, and rooftop hybrid solar solutions.

Honda’s investment marks a pivotal moment in OMC Power’s journey towards its ambitious 1GW clean energy portfolio. As Minoru Kato, Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., stated, Honda will strive to establish a resource-circulating value chain by facilitating the repurposing of end-of-life electric motorcycle batteries, contributing to addressing societal issues and making people’s daily lives more enjoyable.
