A Success Story Born in 1976
When the first Golf GTI debuted in 1976, it was an underdog with an ambitious goal. Featuring an 81 kW (110 PS) engine, black wheel housing extensions, and the now-legendary golf ball gear knob, it was designed for drivers who craved sportiness without sacrificing practicality. While only 5,000 units were originally planned, the market’s response was overwhelming. Dealers sold ten times that amount in the first year alone, eventually leading to a total production of 461,690 first-generation models.
The Ultimate Test: From Land’s End to John O’Groats
The GTI’s reputation for reliability was cemented by its performance in the grueling LeJog rally. Spanning 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometres) across the UK, this “test of toughness” saw a near-production 1983 Golf I GTI navigate forest roads and mountain streams in just four days. Today, that very vehicle—still wearing its original rally patina—serves as a testament to the model’s durability. Its short wheelbase and punchy power output allowed it to outclass much more expensive sports cars of its era, reaching top speeds of up to 182 km/h.
